CONCERT WORKS
Five Moravian Duets B 107 (Pet
moravskych dvojzpevu)—Antonin Dvorak/
ed. Katerina Nova. Dvorak composed the cycle
Moravian Duets for two treble voices with piano
accompaniment at the request of the Prague
wholesale merchant Jan Neff in 1876. This was a
turning point in the career of the then still unknown
composer: it marked the beginning of his lifelong
collaboration with the Simrock publishing house
and opened the way to international recognition.
In March 1880, Dvorak arranged five songs from
this cycle for four treble solo voices a cappella, but
it is often performed by treble choirs. The occasion
was a concert to support the construction of
the Prague National Theatre, at which the
composer conducted his own works. The Five
Moravian Duets now appear for the first time in
a scholarly critical edition. The autograph serves
as the main source; secondary sources consist of
transcriptions by an unknown hand which include
corrections by the composer.

Flare—Dale Trumbore. With modern dissonance
and free tonality, this entire piece drives toward
the last line of the Stacy Gnall poem: "big brother,
I am catching up to you." One long, rhythmic race,
this selection will be a wonderful addition for more
advanced ensembles.

Flexible Motets (Nine SA(T)B Miniatures
for Conducting Study, School Choirs,
and Church Choirs)—Richard Nance. This
collection of motets for SA(T)B voices is the ideal
supplement for advanced choral conducting and
rehearsal methods courses. Each brief motet
incorporates musical characteristics that require
conductors to execute a variety of skills and
techniques, including dynamic changes, cues
and preparations, tempo changes, legato and
staccato patterns, the use of the left hand, and
more. These original motets feature fragments
of standard Latin texts with relatively simple but
musically interesting construction along with
optional piano accompaniment. A beautiful and
versatile collection of motets for any context!

How Do I Listen?—Matthew Harrison. The
lyrics of Persian poet Hafez are often quoted
as proverbs and sayings to be pondered. The
musical treatment of this choral adds an intensity
and depth to those words. This contemplative
piece has a mystical quality that invites the
audience in.

I'll Go Alone—Elizabeth Alexander. A powerful
reflection on personal strength and resolve,
this song blends the poet's tenacity with the
composer's Appalachian roots and musical vision.
The lyrics' determined refrain "I'll go alone if I have
to" speaks to the loneliness and challenge of the
less traveled road. There are short, prominent
solos in all voice parts - ensembles may choose
to feature just a few singers or distribute solos
among a dozen or more soloists. For more
advanced ensembles.

posed in honor of the 100th anniversary of the
passage of the 19th Amendment guaranteeing

empowerment are the important messages in this
blues-infused music.

Native American women are more likely to be
abducted, assaulted, and murdered than any
other population group, and the perpetrators
are rarely charged or convicted. Each verse of
this selection cries out for missing mothers,
daughters, sisters, and Two Spirit (transgender)
loved ones using Native words and phrases from
across North America: Abenaki, Odawa/Ojibwe,
Lakota, and Navajo/Dine. The performance of this
piece is more than the singing of a song. It is an
expression of longing and grief for those whose
voices have been silenced.

In Paradisum—Justin Havard. This setting of
the traditional Latin text was written as a memorial
with a soothing and calming effect. The piece
opens with a solo, then moves into contemporary
harmonies along with some polyphonic vocal
lines. The flowing, haunting piano accompaniment
adds to the loveliness of the work.

In Profundum Maris—Richard Nance. Poet
Kathryn I.W. Sparks uses allusions to nature to
explore the idea of the inexplicable power of music
to heal and save. This original concert work sets
the text with artistry and sensitivity to the extreme
emotions of the lyrics, while bringing in a sense
of calm and acceptance. It is a beautiful work for
more advanced divisi choirs.

Jesus, Lover of My Soul (As performed
by the BYU Women's Chorus)—Joseph P.
Holbrook/arr. Jean S. Applonie. The classic hymn
text by Charles Wesley is given a new setting
that is both gentle and poignant. Beginning with a
unison verse, treble voices then soar to full divisi
as the hymn unfolds. A lovely offering for general
worship or memorial service.

in Latin from the Missa Brevis appears in two

in the larger work; the second is an cappella
version. The orchestrated parts are available for
the larger work. A beautiful statement for concerts
or services in either version.
