LITURGICAL CHRISTMAS ANTHEMS
Lully, Lulla, Lullay—Philip W. J. Stopford.
Treasured words from the 15th-century carol
are paired with a stunning, newly composed
a cappella setting for mixed choirs. Beautiful
cluster harmonies are interposed with a
more open harmonic structure to create this
wonderful sense of ancient and modern. A
soaring descant enters in the final stanza to lift
the piece to a sublime finish.

organ, brass, and percussion. Two separate
versions are available: this service version
which is four minutes long; and a concert

Once in Royal David's City—arr. Matthew
Culloton. Bridging ancient and modern, this
arrangement of an historic English Christmas
carol re-invigorates it with a highly expressive
contemporary harmonic palette. The choral
texture is a cappella with quite a bit of divisi,
and the piece seamlessly flows through a
spectacular modulation to the final verse.

Pat-a-Pan—arr. David Conte. This charming
a cappella setting of the familiar carol has a
bright, rhythmic ostinato pattern that moves
between the sections of the choir. The
Christmas story is told from the perspective of
shepherds playing simple instruments - flutes
and drums - the onomatopoetic sound of
which gives the carol its name. "Pat-a-pan" is
meant to mimic the sound of the drum, and an
accompanying lyric, "tu-re-lu-re-lu," the flute.

Rejoice and Be Merry—Timothy Parsons.
Here is a lighthearted, graceful new carol with
a trick up its sleeve: It's in 7/8 meter. Once you
have the knack of the uneven metrical division
(easy to do, since it never varies), the music
carries you joyfully through the Christmas story,
with the voices supported by a nimble, dance-
like organ accompaniment.

The Rose That Bare Jesu—Duncan Tuomi.
With effective use of mixed meters that
alternate in feel between the English and Latin
texts, this piece incorporates a wide range of
dynamic expression and a divisi texture that
adds warmth.

Silent Night—Bob Chilcott. Chilcott's gentle
and expressive setting of this well-loved
carol opens with unison voices accompanied
by organ. In verse two, SATB voices sing
unaccompanied, with beautiful extended
harmonies and suspensions. The organ and
unison voices return for verse three, capped by
an angelic soprano descant.

Spotless Rose—Ola Gjeilo. An extremely
joyful and uplifting setting of this well-loved

to exist with these lyrics. Vocally accessible,

churches, along with more advanced choirs.
Can be sung in English or Norwegian.
