FOLKSONGS
Hi! Ho! The Rattlin' Bog—arr. Linda Spevacek.
This infectious Irish folk tune is a classic
accumulative song! Verse by verse it adds to
the picture of a tree in a bog, with each addition
anchored by a delightful refrain. With very
limited vocal ranges, it is great for young and
developing choirs and complemented by a lively
piano accompaniment and optional parts for
slide whistle, ratchet, wood block, and cowbell.

The High Barbary—arr. Emily Crocker.
Adventure abounds in this 16th-century English
sea shanty that tells of a ship that encounters
pirates off the Barbary Coast. The song, set
in 6/8 meter, dances with energy as it brings
to life the traditional folk song often heard on
merchant sailing vessels.

Home on the Range—arr. Jerry Estes. This
endearing arrangement of a favorite American
cowboy song is a welcome addition to the
repertoire for tenor-bass choirs. With limited
ranges, accessible choral writing, and the
option to perform a cappella or accompanied,
the flexibility of this piece makes it very easy to
teach and very rewarding to perform.

Howdidow, deediddleumday (Leatherwing
Bat)—arr. Vicki Tucker Courtney. A fantastic
piece to teach vowels, diction, rhythms, and
pitch precision, this English folk song is fun to
sing and impressive to perform. The nonsense
syllables represent birds and bats chatting to
one another in a rhythmic, witty fashion that
your students will love to sing. An excellent
opening festival selection for developing choirs!

Kookaburra—Marion Sinclair/arr. Audrey
Snyder. The kookaburra is a terrestrial tree
kingfisher native to Australia, and this charming
nursery rhyme song details its distinctive and
humorous call which sounds like laughing.
The simple melody is presented first in unison,
then canon, then a descant texture, and finally,
harmonized by a lower ostinato - all harmony
techniques that are easy to learn for young
developing singers.

Leave Her, Johnny—arr. Daniel Lynch.
This gently rocking sea shanty was generally
reserved for the end of a long voyage when
the sailors would be leaving the ship. The "her"
in the song refers to the ship, and the lyrics
express the hardships of the voyage. This
lyrical arrangement is ideal for beginning tenor-
bass choirs. The musical setting is often in two
parts but expands occasionally to three parts in
this easily learned version.
