Wide Open Spaces—Sarah Quartel. Commiss-
ioned for the 2015 National Conference of the
American Choral Directors Association, this
work reflects on the journeys and adventures
to be found in the wide open spaces within
ourselves and in the world around us. The
uplifting melody is passed from the upper
voices to the lower voices before the piece
opens out into an expansive texture with rich
harmonies. A playful episode of scat singing is
introduced before a resolute final chorus brings
this evocative piece to a serene close.

Will the Circle Be Unbroken—arr. J. David
Moore. This wildly popular arrangement is
a favorite with choral festivals all over the
country. Beginning in the style of a bluegrass
trio, the piece opens into a four-part gospel
celebration of the power of song to create
community. Often performed with an opening
solo refrain.

Wind on the Hill—Douglas E. Wagner. This
piece captures the curious sense of wonder
of Winnie-the-Pooh author A.A. Milne. Written
lyrically and simply, two-part voices of any age
will appreciate the whimsy of the wind.

Windy Nights—Cynthia Gray. A dramatic poem
by Robert Louis Stevenson is the inspiration for
this intense, exhilarating work, which portrays
the poet's childhood fear of storms. The music
aptly captures the sound and excitement of a
stormy, windy night, which the text likens to a
riding horseman and the pounding of his horse's
hooves. Excellent editorial notes provide
fascinating background about this poem and
its famous author. This is wonderful poetry and
music for developing choirs!

The Winter Owl—Paul David Thomas. This
compelling setting of a William Shakespeare
text vividly describes the winter season with its
frigid temperatures and chilling wind. In contrast,
the owl hooting merrily is illustrated with a
change in meter and accented syncopated
phrases. This minor-mode piece provides an
interesting change of pace for winter concerts.

Winter Waltz—Vicki Tucker Courtney.
Beautifully depicting the change of seasons
from fall to winter, this lilting minor waltz spins
with freshness and excitement that treble
choirs will surely enjoy. Lightly syncopated
phrases and interesting harmonies with a
contemporary feel are pleasant to sing. A lovely
fit for fall or winter concerts!

Wishing Star—Beth Bolton/arr. Laura Farnell.
"Shining and shimmering up in the sky..." this
text is reminiscent of the Star Light, Star Bright
nursery rhyme. The use of Mixolydian mode
and compound meter create a sense of longing
with an endearing, whimsical quality. Choirs will
appreciate the independence of line that creates
the beautiful quality of this concert piece.

With You—Laura Farnell. Canadian poet
Lucy Maud Montgomery of Anne of Green
Gables fame provides lyrics that seem
especially relevant again after a time when
in-person relationships were challenging.

inspiring text is paired with expressive vocal
lines that convey the emotion in the text with
alternating joy and poignancy.

Wynken, Blynken and Nod—Blake
Richter & Ryan Main. Eugene Fields' poem
highlights the fantastic dreamlike excursion
of Wynken, Blynken, and Nod as they sail off
in a wooden shoe to fish the night seas with
nets of silver and gold. It feels like a traditional
sea shanty, but this original composition has
plenty of musical excitement to offer young
singers. The violin obbligato and artful piano
accompaniment really add to the texture, and
the conservative ranges in each voicing make
it approachable yet satisfying.

You Are the Song—Jacob Narverud. Set

supported by a stylish accompaniment, this
is an empowering piece for young treble
choirs to perform. Contemporary harmonies
and whimsical voice leading give this concert
work a modern flair that will appeal to your

complement the text, "You are all you need to
be, and much, much more... you are hope, you
are the future, you are the song."

You Do Not Walk Alone—Elaine Hagenberg.
"May you always remember when the shadows
fall, you do not walk alone." This ethereal
setting of a traditional Irish blessing is scored
in a variety of voicings with piano. Deft strokes
of Celtic styling within the melody weaves
throughout the vocal texture. Gradually building
in intensity, it transitions into the final stanza
with a burst of light, aided by a key change,
then slowly draws to a quiet close.
