His Light in Us—Kim Andre Arnesen.
Commissioned by the St. Olaf Choir for the
2016 St. Olaf Christmas Festival, this work
is a thanksgiving, a song about the gift of a
tiny child that suggests that only the nature
of love is changeless. It sings about our
renewed hope and how light now shines
because Christmas is a new and refreshing
gift; our hearts are renewed, and our hope
is renewed. This joyful reflection was written
for Christmas, but can be sung at any time of
year as a song of hope.

Hodie—Jacob Narverud. Rhythmic and
dramatic, this exciting piece is the perfect way
to open your holiday concert. The traditional
Latin text is given a perfectly crafted modern
setting with optional body percussion and
driving piano accompaniment. A short
contrasting lyrical section and an optional
descant that soars above the final statement
bring breadth and sweep in a piece that will be
a holiday highlight. A separate score for the
body percussion and an accompaniment track
are available as free downloads.

Hodie Christus Natus Est—Laura Farnell.
This work is built around the Latin Hodie
Christus natus est text (Today Christ Is
Born) and the Venite Adoremus from Adeste
Fideles (O Come, All Ye Faithful). The bridge
in English provides nice contrast in this
gorgeous, lush setting for younger voices. An
optional violin (or C instrument) obbligato adds
warmth and lyricism.

for both church and school choirs, this setting
of the traditional English carol is absolutely
exquisite and extremely well crafted. Each

I Saw Three Ships—arr. Mark Hayes. This
spirited setting of the traditional English carol
for choir and four-hand piano opens with a
rousing choral fanfare. Verses follow with the
melody sung first by upper voices and then
lower voices. Next, a homophonic verse is
followed by a marvelously creative section in
which the primary carol partners with Lo, How
a Rose E'er Blooming. Building in intensity
towards the close, we hear successively the
"bells" and the "angels" before "all rejoice
amain." Some choral divisi enriches the score,
including rich chords in the finale.
