CONCERT & CONTEST very easy
The Tears of Arizona (Pearl Harbor Remem-
bered)—Brian Balmages. Commissioned to
commemorate the 75th anniversary of the
attack on Pearl Harbor, the music begins
very solemnly, referring to the "tears" of oil
that continue to be shed daily by the sunken
ship. The section The Pride of Arizona moves
past the tears and to the pride of the crew
members and the feeling of the "spirit of
aloha." Percussion loosely imitates the groove
of a luau, yet is juxtaposed with moments of
pause and reflection. The final statement feels
incomplete, reminding the audience that the
tears have not stopped flowing. Magical!

The Tempest—Robert W. Smith. This exciting
work is guaranteed to make your beginners
sound like pros! The brass has a strong, rugged
sound underneath rhythmic woodwind ostinatos,
and the piece easily comes together to display
all the fury of a tempest! This would make a
great opener for any young band concert, and
your audience will be amazed at how good The
Tempest makes your group sound!

The Lizard King—Aaron McMichael. This
beginning band composition, inspired by the
composer's son's fascination with lizards,
uses at most eight notes in each instrument's
range and is designed for use at the end of
the first year of instruction. Featuring many
opportunities for dynamics and articulation
development, this piece will help your musicians
to develop these essential skills. With plenty of
percussion parts to keep players interested and
every section playing the melody, this is sure to
become a student favorite!

The Lone Knight—Adam Arnold. In the
Middle Ages, knights were bound by chivalry
- a religious, moral, and social code of conduct
they were sworn to uphold. Musically depicting
the essence of bravery as a solitary knight
gallops across the landscape to the aid of
the defenseless, this bold and heroic work
unsheathes its sword and clashes with the foe
in a thrilling battle of good versus evil. This work
calls for four timpani with no pitch changes and
reinforces part independence in the low brass.

Three Minutes to Midnight—JaRod Hall. It's
a race against the clock in this unique musical
countdown that keeps listeners on the edge of
their seats. The tension-filled sounds include
moments of eerie apprehension which increase
in tension as they build into heavy, raucous
statements with great intensity. The Dies Irae
theme pops in and out of the texture, introducing
a sinister motif that indicates something much
darker. Unique and colorful! (2:40)

Thrill Ride—Brian Balmages. Fear, anxiety,
adrenaline, and a sheer rush of excitement all
take center stage in this musical roller-coaster
ride. Percussion simulates the sound of the lift
hill before the ride takes off in an action-packed
series of drops, turns, and loops. Eventually the
riders get their hands up in the air, reveling in
unabashed joy before the car coasts to a stop.

thing as too much percussion! This delightful
pops work for young band provides a groovy
vehicle for drumming fun for your percussionists
and your wind players. A full band percussion

moment for the conductor, makes this delightful
work for developing musicians stand out from

beginning band to a tropical island! Using
simple patterns based on Carribean rhythms,

Warrior's Path—Travis Weller. Performable
by as few as five winds and four percussion,
this beginning band composition depicts a
lone warrior beginning a journey across an
ancient land. This solitary warrior is joined by
others on the way, and together they defend
those who cannot defend themselves. Only
a minute and a half long and using only
the first six notes of the B-flat concert
scale, this is a great choice for a second-
semester concert and for bands with limited
instrumentation. Use this to work on creating
even articulations and to develop listening
skills between the ensemble's members. A
great choice for concert and contest.

Standridge. The second in the 16th Empire
series, this installment focuses on providing
students with a vehicle to master the two-
sixteenths-one-eighth rhythms. Exotic scales,
reduced ranges, and optional clarion notes for
young clarinets add to the effect of this great
teaching work.
