note melody. Rich percussion textures and

charming pentatonic tune. The result is a unique
composition full of exceptional opportunities for
music making. This piece is a great opportunity

The Crystal Fountain—Brian Balmages.
Based on the hymn Guide Me, O Thou Great
Redeemer, this heartfelt work begins delicately,
relying on fragments of the hymn. Overlapping
entrances establish a sense of timelessness
as the music develops, ultimately reaching
a powerful climax where the piece's original
melody and the full hymn tune are presented
simultaneously. As the music fades, the listener
is left with a sense of peace and closure.
Simply magical.

really get a nice sound with this one! Carl's
original work explores the rich American folk
style in two sections. The first has broad,
moving harmonies under a Shenandoah-

Danse Carnivale—Randall D. Standridge.
Musical drama and humor are on display in
this homage to Romantic orchestra repertoire.
A blazing tempo, interspersed with very
slow sections, sudden dynamic shifts and
the juxtaposition of d minor and F major add
contrast to this dynamic work. The perfect
choice for an opener, closer or encore work!

DarkHeart (Escape from DarkHeart Castle)—
Randall D. Standridge. The final movement of
"The Darklands Symphony"wraps the work
up in a very gripping way, musically depicting
a daring escape from the castle DarkHeart.
Its dark, brooding nature is portrayed by the
driving rhythms, dissonances and trills. The
plainchant Dies Irae is used prominently as
thematic material that ties the entire symphony
together. DarkHeart can very successfully be
performed as a standalone work. Menacing!

Darklands Legends—Randall D. Standridge.
This musical setting paints a portrait of three
characters that live in an imaginary world.
The first movement represents Prince Loon,
the many-faced prince whose changing
features and moods are heard in the varied
and contrasting music. The solemn music of
movement 2 describes the grim ruins of an
old church that guards a deep, dark secret. A
frantic masquerade of the evil queen concludes
the work, growing faster and faster as it leads
to a fierce and thrilling finish.

Drums of the Saamis—Samuel R. Hazo.
Opening with tribal drums, then featuring a
haunting melody simulating the traditional
wooden flute, this work is based on those
two themes. Both elements are developed,
varied, and enhanced throughout, with
modern-sounding chords and rhythms. By
the end, the marriage of the old and the new
is complete. This powerful work closes as it

Escape from the Deep—Brian Balmages.
The miraculous survival of nine Navy officers
is depicted in this selection based on the book
of the same name. The music begins with a
military quality, but then takes on a much more
dissonant character as the crew members fight
for their lives. Excerpts from America begin to
appear in various forms, first in adrenaline-
packed moments, then in a brief moment of
solitude. The final burst of energy portrays the
sailors' incredible escape from the depths of
the ocean to the surface of the water. Powerful!
