monster chart takes its cues from Sing Sing
Sing and goes right over the top! Not many
tunes can match the energy of that big band
classic, but this one sure does. You'll know it
from Gordon Goodwin's Grammy-nominated
CD Swingin' for the Fences, and it is one very
hot chart!

Stay in Your Lane—Gordon Goodwin.
More accessible than most Gordon Goodwin
charts, Stay in Your Lane is a hard-hitting,
good-time shuffle groove played at about
135 bpm. There's lots of call and response
between sections, a swingin' shout chorus,
and suggested solos are included for C,
B-flat, and E-flat instruments and trombone.
Of course, improvised solos are an option. An
auxiliary percussion part plus optional flute and
vibraphone parts are also included. Infectious,
fun, and highly recommended!

somewhat zany take on the familiar rhythm
changes form. This piece zips along at 236, so

B.S. (for saxophonist Brian Sjoerdinga)—
Charley Harrison. Here is an animated,
up-tempo chart that gives way for your wind
section to shimmer through with an a cappella
soli section. Inspired by some classic Duke
Ellington pieces, this tune features a tenor sax
soloist with room for a flashy drum solo too.

this is the great Thelonious Monk tune set in a
straight-eighth Latin feel. The solo space is for

Big Dipper (Vanguard Jazz Orchestra
Signature Edition)—Thad Jones. Big Dipper
was originally commissioned by Count Basie
for an entire album of Thad Jones' music;
however, Basie never made the record, instead
suggesting that Thad start his own band. Big
Dipper still maintains that swinging Basie
mindset and is an extended 16-bar blues. Its
basic foundations are a relaxed but powerful
rhythm section with a driving ride cymbal and
crisp hi-hat underpinning saxes and brass that
are tight and always on the back of the beat.
10754221 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . .65.00
Big Dipper—Thad Jones. As recorded by
the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra on the
Central Park North album, this classic swinger
is a winning mix of solo with rhythm section
and full band passages. The designated
soloists include piano, trumpet and tenor, with
the drummer taking a solo just before the final
four bars. The rhythm section parts are partially
notated with chords cued. This iconic chart
belongs in every mature jazz band's library!

written for the Count Basie Orchestra in 1983
and later revised for the Sammy Nestico CD
"This is the Moment," this great blues tune
features an extended, three chorus soli for
the sax section. Alto sax and piano are the
designated soloists, with optional solo space
also provided for guitar and trombone. The
chart closes out with a very powerful shout.

Bohemian Rhapsody—Freddie Mercury/
arr. Rick Hirsch. Yes, this is for real!
Queen's magnum opus, in a jazz language,
orchestrated for big band, with jazz solos for
trombone (also cued in trumpet 5/flugelhorn)
and alto or bari sax thrown in for good
measure. Additional features include multiple
tempos from 76 to 304 bpm, an a cappella
sax soli introduction, and a jazz ballad with
double time, shuffle, and swing sections
culminating in a rubato ending. This is a
major work for jazz ensemble at 9-10 minutes
that students and players will want to work
on. Solid saxophone parts, tempo changes,
mature brass figures, and a whole lot of fun!

written high D with an optional F, and the
rhythm section parts are fully notated.

combination of hip-hop and up-tempo swing,
here's a marvelous take on Bud Powell's
bebop classic. A front line of alto, tenor and
trumpet are featured off the top followed by
an extended soli for the entire trumpet section.

for advanced groups to take on.

Gordon Goodwin. In the style of Sammy
Nestico and Count Basie, this medium swing
chart is full of nuances. Included is solo space
for all saxes, trumpet 4, and trombone 1. At
about 110 bpm, this is truly a wonderful chart
that will satisfy any mature band. As recorded
by Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band.

Fill in the Gap—Len Pierro. A hard-swinging
sax soli kicks off this dynamic chart before
the main head is picked up by fourth trumpet
and lead alto sax. Solo changes are included
for alto sax and trumpet. Lead trumpet plays
a high E, and the lead trombone plays a
high B-flat. This is a great chart for the more
advanced ensemble.
11515655 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . .50.00
Giant Steps—John Coltrane/arr. Mark Taylor.
Here's a fresh take on a traditional jazz
standard. The style is still up-tempo swing, and
the saxes maintain a fair share of the spotlight
along with ensemble hits and solo spots for
drums; however, there is a brief excursion into
5/4 and a few other meter surprises that help
give this outstanding chart a contemporary
edge. Highly recommended!

passed throughout the ensemble. With dense
harmony and captivating phrasing, this chart
