JAZZ/ROCK & FUNK easy / medium-easy
Riverfront Strut—Dean Sorenson. Strut
your band's stuff with this funky New Orleans
second-line street-beat chart. The piece begins
quietly, but then the party really starts with all
the wind players improvising collectively. The
first statement of the melody will sure have
your audience grooving. After the solos, the
music changes to a more straight-ahead swing,
followed by some rhythm breaks before the
second-line feel returns. Here, the melody is
presented in fragments. Interesting and catchy
for both your ensemble and audience!

Rock, Don't Roll—Kris Berg. A fun and
straightforward rock groove reminiscent of an
'80s TV sitcom theme, this is scored for a full
jazz ensemble but playable by two altos, tenor,
two trumpets, trombone, and rhythm section.
Solo changes for alto, tenor, and bari sax;
trumpet; and trombone.
11517934 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . .52.00
Seven Nation Army—Jack White/arr. Paul
Murtha. Featuring one of the most powerful riffs
of the rock era, this hit recorded by The White
Stripes in 2003 is arranged here in a hard-
hitting version for younger players. No solos
are required and the melody is skillfully passed
around from section to section. Fully-notated
bass lines and piano voicings are included,
and it's playable with optional reduced or
augmented instrumentations. Lots of fun and
highly recommended!
10775172 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . .40.00
Sideways Walking Dog—Zachary Smith.
Sideways Walking Dog features a Latin/rock
groove at around 180 bpm with very simple
rhythms and a great melody line. Additional
features include easy brass ranges, a written
solo for tenor sax, and written-out drum fills.
Clever, plus easy to play, plus well-written
equals a quality chart! Playable with optional
reduced or expanded instrumentations.
10452072 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . .42.00
Son of the Chicken—Kris Berg. It's back!
This was written for the 20th anniversary of the
original The Chicken, so it's time to celebrate
with this funky fowl! This chart is more
accessible for younger bands, with a chorale
intro, written solos for trumpet and tenor, and
lead trumpet range to written G on top of the
staff. It's funky. It's hip. 'Cause everybody loves
the Chicken!
11355024 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . .48.00
Tu Valor—Michele Fernandez. This attractive
and moderately paced original for young
players features a tuneful melody in a cha-
cha style. Scored with plenty of variety and

The rhythm section parts are carefully notated
to ensure an authentic stylistic interpretation.

Uptown Funk!—arr. Michael Sweeney. From

height of the disco era, this tune recorded
by Sister Sledge caught fire on the R&B pop
charts in 1979. Here is a great-sounding and
funky version for younger players. There are
no solos, all horn sections get their chance
with the melody, and there's a unique and
effective rhythm-section-only interlude.

Here is a superb chart on a wonderful jazz

lines. Written-out solos are provided for
trumpet and alto. Includeds a few sax solos
and beautiful harmonies. The lead trumpet

developing bands in mind, this fun, accessible
chart can be performed as written or used as a
tool to reinforce ear training and improvising.
There is ample solo space for alto saxophone,
trumpet, and guitar, and it can be played with
a swing or hip-hop feel. The reasonable brass
ranges and flexibility of this chart make it a
must-have for developing bands!

Act Your Age—Gordon Goodwin/arr. Peter
Blair. Arranger Peter Blair has taken the
hot Gordon Goodwin chart Act Your Age
and revised it for developing players. "Slick
and funky" describes this very accessible
arrangement. There are written solos for 1st
alto (cued for 2nd alto) and a 1st trumpet solo
cued in all four trumpet parts. The lead trumpet
has a written A above the staff, but technically

Africa—Paich & Porcaro/arr. Ralph Ford.
Here's a wonderful take on the group Toto's
classic rock tune from the '80s. It's solidly
scored throughout and sounds amazingly
like the original while remaining accessible
for developing jazz bands. With nice dynamic
contrasts, an uncomplicated melodic line,
and a medium rock groove, this chart is one
that younger players can really dig into, yet it
will sound mature when performed by a more
advanced group. More features include:
half-note tempo of 90 bpm; written or ad lib
solos for alto sax 1 and trombone 1; trumpet
1 range to written G on top of the staff; and
optional parts for flute, clarinet and vibes.
Great tune, fine chart!

Aftershock!—Larry Barton. This funky rock
chart sure is easy enough...but we won't tell
anyone! It's bold and contemporary with a big
sound and huge impact, along with reasonable
ranges and technical demands. An open solo
section with written suggested solos and very
easy changes will really build confidence in
improvising. And, the most amazing thing is
that such a playable chart sounds so darn hot!

Apocalypse—Larry Barton. An intense,
hard-hitting, up-tempo rock tune with the
feel of a cataclysmic event! Played at around
150 bpm, it features repetitive rhythms and
patterns that guarantee jazz bands will be
performance-ready with minimal rehearsal
time. With careful attention to instrument
ranges and written-out solos over easy
changes, this chart will be accessible for
developing ensembles as well as a lot of fun
for more advanced groups. All this, and it's
playable with optional limited instrumentation.
Pure excitement!

big band in a funky medium tempo. Combining
the elements of New Orleans second line and
contemporary rock styles, this unique chart

written or improvised solos for trumpet and alto
sax, and the lead trumpet range is to written G.

Bari, Bari Good!—Andy Clark. Here's a super
chart to feature the sax player who hardly ever
gets the "good" parts! Your bari sax player will
love getting some air time in this gospel-rock
chart! It includes an open solo section for the
bari sax, or any other soloist of your choice. It's
a very appealing tune with a big solid sound.
2468254 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . .50.00
Bari-ed Alive!—Erik Sherburne. Here's a
straight-ahead, rockin' bari sax solo feature
set at 156 bpm. The ensemble has a lot of
exposure and the writing has a ton of style.
The changes are a variation on the blues
form with a little bit of mixed modes to give it
just the right feel to suit the title. The solo is
entirely written, with some optional sections for
improvising. Your brass can bop and dance in
the background with their subtle hits that set
up the melody, making for an entertaining
performance to win over your audiences. If you
haven't had a bari sax feature for a while, then
this one will be a great choice!
