The aching emotion in this interpretation of Scarborough Fair is a genuine treat for young string groups. The lyrics of the 16th century (possibly older) ballad relates a heartsick couple proposing impossible tasks to prove unending love to one another. Embodied with simple counter lines, harmonies, and dynamic range, Brian Balmages paints an image of youthful love and its inherent theatrics. Excellent! 10091946 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .40.00 A Sertaneja—Fransisca Chiquinha Gonzaga/ arr. Dion Morales. Originally composed for voice and piano, this arrangement musically paints a picture of the composer's love of "the hinterland - the land behind the body of water," Rio de Janeiro. Flowing slurs, dotted rhythms, 3/4 time in D minor, and the passing of the melody between the strings celebrate the lapping waters around Rio de Janeiro and a graceful Brazilian dance by one of its beloved composers. Students will love performing this! 11399753 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .35.00 Shaker Hymn—Traditional/arr. John O'Reilly. Based on the hymn "Tis the Gift to be Simple" (used in Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring), this arrangement is a superb vehicle for exploring Early American music and its links to the present. Skillfuly arranged by John O'Reilly, this selection is correlated with Strictly Strings, Book 1, page 34. 2375491 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .46.00 Simple Gifts—Joseph Brackett/arr. Carrie Lane Gruselle. Lighthearted and energetic, this arrangement of Simple Gifts suggests a dance-like character. With its familiar and captivating tune supported by a gentle but persistent underlying rhythmic motif, students will study balance of sound and staccato and legato bowing styles. 10592167 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .45.00 Smoky Mountain Lullaby—Erica Donahoe. Influenced by the music of Appalachia, this setting of a lullaby feels like a love ballad and evokes feelings of home and country. Visions of a beautiful spring or summer evening come to mind. This piece is a great opportunity for a young orchestra to work on developing a beautiful tone and depth of sound. 11510727 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .50.00 Stone Mountain Stomp—Carl Strommen. This one stands out in the "fiddle tune" category. Carl Strommen has managed to take some of the sounds of Southern fiddling and mix them with a Western "Copland-esque" style and make something really special. Another great feature of this one is that the violas and low strings all get a chance at some fiddling. 2472094 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .53.00 Variations on an Irish Tune—Brian Balmages. Based on Thomas Moore's famous song The Minstrel Boy, this work uses the full gamut of styles and techniques to showcase your ensemble. In three distinct variations, lyrical phrasing, energetic rhythms, and fiddle styles ultimately lead to an exciting conclusion. 10008688 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .55.00 Where the River Shannon Flows—James I. Russell/arr. Brian Balmages. Based on the emotional Irish song, this thoughtful setting paints a picture of a man dreaming of the day he can return home. At times, the piece feels more like a fantasy than an arrangement as the melody weaves through an increasingly complex series of textures and harmonies before returning to the plaintive sounds of the opening. 10877071 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .40.00 Zira! Zira!—arr. Kathryn Griesinger. This traditional Ethiopian folk song is an ancient tribal call to war. Optional percussion depicts the pounding of the African drums that stirs a sense of anticipation and bravery. Intermediate students will encounter double-stops and heavy accented rhythms in cut time. Includes alternate Violin 2 parts in alto clef, as well as Violin 3 parts (Viola in treble clef) for flexibility. Powerful! 11175184 String Orchestra, Percussion Optional . . . . . .49.00 Folk & Multicultural Medium-Easy African Adventure—Robert Sheldon. When it comes time to celebrate the musical colors of Africa, combine the forces of your string group with your percussion ensemble on this stylish concert work for the developing ensemble. Repetitive rhythms and a catchy melodic hook propel the piece forward as it develops momentum and dramatic flair. Substitute Orff instruments for the melodic percussion for an even more authentic timbre. A guaranteed favorite! 10280280 String Orchestra, Percussion Optional . . . . . .46.00 Ahrirang—arr. Soo Han. A lyrical setting of the beloved Korean Folk song, for intermediate- level string orchestra. Grade 3. 10991743 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .50.00 The Ash Grove—arr. Jim Palmer. A gorgeous arrangement of this traditional Welsh folk song. A variety of orchestration techniques including pizzicato, rich harmonies, sweeping dynamics, tempo and key changes, and beautiful counterlines will make your young string orchestra sound full and mature. Excellent for teaching part independence and expressive playing. 11354998 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .50.00 Ashokan Farewell (from "The Civil War")— Jay Ungar/arr. Calvin Custer. The simple, memorable theme from the acclaimed PBS series makes excellent concert fare. Calvin Custer's realistic treatment includes the easy violin solo, piano and percussion. This is technically quite easy, but very emotional. 2238723 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .54.00 Blue-Fire Fiddler—Soon Hee Newbold. This kickin' fiddle tune is energetic, exciting and fun. The fast and furious fiddling sounds much harder than it really is. Riffs, finger patterns and bowings are very idiomatic and lend themselves to fast playing. This is sure to be the hit of the concert! 2474322 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .60.00 British Isles Travelogue—arr. Sandra Lentner. British Isles Travelogue features a folksong from each of the four UK countries. The Ash Grove from Wales highlights first and second violin harmonies, followed by the lively English Morris Dance. In Blue Bell of Scotland, each section has its chance to shine, accompanied by the droning bagpipe fifths in the other parts. The Irish Sailors' Hornpipe leaves listeners ready to dance a jig and sends the more advanced violins to third position. 11518914 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .45.00 Canarios—Gaspar Sanz/arr. Deborah Baker Monday. Canarios is a movement taken from the Suite Espanola for guitar by Gaspar Sanz, a leading composer of Spanish Baroque music. This delightful arrangement in D major engages all sections of the ensemble in the interplay between 6/8 and 3/4. The rich and resonant texture makes this piece a great concert or festival selection. 10907783 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .60.00
