Carnival of the Amphibians—Mark Barnard.

spin on the classic "Carnival of the Animals,"
this work features all five types of amphibians
in movements such as Frogs & Toads;
Caecilians and Newts & Salamanders. The
short Introduction and grand finale The
Amphibians and the Swan are freely arranged
from Saint-Saens' original composition,
providing students with insight into the beloved
work. With many skill-building techniques
introduced to all five string sections, this
work offers a fun and challenging experience.

A Chameleon Concerto—Richard Meyer.

Confluence—Renata Bratt. This piece is the
confluence of J.S. Bach and South America. A
lively, Brazilian-influenced tune in C minor uses
a chord progression, suggested by Bach, in
jazz form. Confluence begins with a passionate
cello solo and brief violin solo. All instrument
groups (or student solos) have an opportunity
to shine in the suggested solo section after the
presentation of the tune, first by the violas. A
unique opportunity for string students to absorb
jazz haromonies!

Dance of Youth (Xinjiang Folk Song)—
arr. Xinyu (Maggie) Francis-Ma. This joyful
dance contains wonderful stylistic influences
from the Xinjiang province of China. From
syncopated accompaniment figures to soaring
lyric melodies, this arrangement has it all.
There is one key change in the middle from
A minor to G minor and back. Excellent for
teaching chromaticism, augmented seconds,
and a variety of bow strokes. Violin 1 and cello
require shifting.

Danse (from "African Suite")—Samuel
Coleridge-Taylor/arr. Kirk Moss. The artistic
turning point of English composer Samuel
Coleridge-Taylor's career happened in his
twenties when he met the African-American
poet Paul Laurence Dunbar. Dunbar influenced
the young composer to concentrate on his
African heritage. Originally composed for
piano as the final movement of "African Suite,"
Danse begins with two introductory chords
followed by energetic swinging rhythms and
repeated angular melodies. Students will love
the moods in this festive overture, evocative of
later Broadway musicals.

to have some fun! In Dragonfly's Journey,
composer Avner Dorman has created a work
of art for young orchestras, reminiscent of
Britten's Simple Symphony, that sounds like
something you would hear in a professional
concert hall. A motor rhythm of off-the-string
8th notes, primarily in 1st position, propels
the music forward as the ensemble explores
the key of A major. Come following along on
an exciting and energetic adventure with this
young dragonfly.
