5th Avenue Rock—Kathryn Griesinger.
This rocking piece for beginning strings is based
on the interval of a perfect fifth - thus the title!
Students can practice easy string crossings
on open strings, simple rhythms, and stepwise
finger patterns. Violin 2 doubles viola and cello
doubles bass to build confidence and create a full
sound. The piano and drum set fill in during rests,
allowing the young orchestra to shine at its very
first concert.

The Abandoned Funhouse—
Brian Balmages. Written for the true beginner,
this piece takes the listener on an eerie tour that
can best be described as an unsettling experience
with a touch of curiosity and anxiousness. Piano
and optional celesta (playable on keyboard) create
a haunting background reminiscent of a film score.
Instruments move mostly by stepwise motion,
and all string crossings involve an open string. No
eighth notes are used, and many instruments use
only five or six notes.

Abstraction—Tyler Arcari.
A nice easy piece for beginning string orchestra
with a dark and forceful tune in B minor using only
the first six notes of the D major scale. Pizzicato
and dynamics are reinforced, and there is very
simple bass independence. Works well as an
opener or closer.

Cellos in Charge!
(A Cello Section Feature)—Sarah Siegler.
In this uplifting piece, your beginning cello section
gets a chance to shine! The cello section plays
first, introducing the main theme for the other
sections, and then introduces changing rhythms
as the piece develops. The piece is based on the
very first notes your beginners are learning and
will be perfect for a first-year concert. Let your
cellos take the lead!

Using only the first six notes of the D scale, this
arrangement cleverly combines four classic
carols into a delightful setting for the youngest of
orchestra musicians. Your first-year students will
shine as they delight audiences with I Saw Three
Ships; Patapan; In Dulci Jubilo and Deck the Halls.

Entry of the Tumblers—Elliot Del Borgo.
An ideal piece for early string orchestra! Although
it can be played by any student who has learned
the D scale, this creative composition makes it
sound much harder than it is. Thanks to some
contrary motion, scalewise passages in harmony,
even a small section in minor, your beginning
orchestra will sound impressive.

First Scale March—Mark Williams.
What a perfect way to celebrate learning that very
first scale! Using only a one-octave D major scale
and quarter notes, all sections join in the fun as
the scale is played both forward and backward in
the tuneful, easy march. Lots of interplay between
the high and low strings help to make this a highly
interesting and educational first-year selection.

Impulse—Brian Balmages.
For the very youngest musicians, this highly
energetic piece does not use eighth notes, is
based on a one-octave D Major scale, and uses
mostly stepwise motion throughout. Despite these
features, the music is powerful and aggressive.

Instinct—Brian Balmages.
This aggressive work for true beginners portrays
those inherent, sometimes raw behaviors that
help a species survive. All string parts move
almost entirely by stepwise motion and use just
half and whole notes. Violin 1 uses a full D major
scale, and all other instruments use D through B.
An optional percussion part adds considerable
interest to the piece. A background track is also
available if you do not have percussionists.
Powerful!

Using only quarter notes and half notes in modes
of D major, this composition evokes the feeling
of a mysterious march through the darkness that
students will enjoy playing and parents will enjoy
hearing! With easy bowings, limited range, and a
viola part that doubles second violin, this work will
make a first-year orchestra sound marvelous at
their first concert of the year!

Jazz for the Open Strings—Jiyoung Um.
A great piece for beginning orchestras, both fun
and educational. Using only the open strings
and simple two repeating eighth-note patterns,
beginning players will get an introduction to jazz
while learning ensemble playing and counting.
Players and audiences will particularly enjoy the
middle section where the low strings play pizzicato
on an open string jazz bass line while the high
strings snap their fingers. A written piano part fills
out the harmonies and adds some jazzy fillers.
