Tango Traicionero—Kirt Mosier. Tango
Traicionero, by Kirt Mosier, means
"treacherous tango." The tango is a Latin
dance that first developed in Buenos Aires,
Argentina, in the mid-19th century. Imagine a
gathering of bohemian nomads and workers
having a dance party in the streets. There is
a natural tension in this tango which mirrors
the intoxicating nighttime atmosphere. All
orchestra sections work together to perform
slides and shifts between notes of the melodic
figures to add intrigue to the sound. A lively
middle section builds to a key change and
recapitulation. The work culminates with tense
chords to an exciting finish. (3:40)

Torrent—Ted Allen. A storm of fiddle tunes
and ostinatos portrays a flash flood rushing
down a southwestern slot canyon in this fast-
paced outing for advancing string orchestra.
Conceived as an American response to the
fourth movement of Gustav Holst's "St. Paul's
Suite," Torrent is set in a lively 6/8 meter in
minor pentatonic tonality. After the piece flows
through a few fiddle-friendly keys, the first
violins bring on the deluge with accessible
third-position arpeggios.

Two Scenes from the Hollow—Kirt Mosier.
This two-movement piece is based on "The
Legend of Sleepy Hollow." The first section,
entitled Ichabod's Walk, is introduced with
lines from the American classic: "What fearful
shapes and shadows beset his path amidst the
dim and ghastly glare of a snowy night!" The
second movement, entitled Hessian's Ride, is
introduced with lines that end "...the apparition
of a figure on horseback without a head. It is
said by some to be the ghost of a Hessian
trooper." The chilling music will be the highlight
of your concert! Highly recommended!

A Utopian Fantasia—Anthony Granata. A
beautifully majestic and serene landscape
shrouded in mystery and wonder - set in the
key of E minor, the opening features a rich
legato ballad with an eerily somber melody
passing through each section of the orchestra.
The mood abruptly shifts to a jarring and
heavily accented six-note motif. Reminiscent
of Classical literature, a small contrapuntal
passage develops this motif, interspersed with
the original opening melody. Inversions of the
theme finally give way to a call-and-response
dialogue within the different sections of the
orchestra before finally ending quietly and
slowly with a subtle nod to the opening.
