Uzaugo Liepa (Up Grew the Linden Tree)—
Kestutis Daugirdas. Expanding on a traditional
Lithuanian sutartine (part-song), this dreamy
reverie is about a woman who sings a young
man to sleep under the nine branches of a linden
tree that was battered by a storm. Recognized
by UNESCO as Masterpieces of the Oral and
Intangible Heritage of Humanity, sutartines are
traditionally sung with solo lines and canon. This
work preserves that texture in the first stanza and
then diverts to a newly composed section that
further illuminates the meaning of the text.

wait with them through the difficult seasons of life.
With powerful pop-like harmonies and vocal lines,
this expressive ballad allows for poignant and
emotive singing and musical sensitivity.

We Shall Walk Through the Valley—arr.
Undine Smith Moore. The arrangement of this
African American spiritual is both accessible and
gorgeous. A short choral section is used for the
introduction, interludes between verses, and at the
conclusion, adding cohesion to a lovely setting.

The Wellerman—arr. Jacob Narverud. This 19th-
century folk song from New Zealand experienced
new life as a viral hit on TikTok and spawned
the sea-shanty trend. The ballad tells the story
of the hopeful inhabitants of a whaling village
waiting for the Wellerman ship to bring supplies.
This rousing arrangement is great fun and highly
accessible as it can be performed with either the
piano accompaniment or a cappella.

When Jesus Wept, the Falling Tear—William
Billings/arr. Kyle Johnson. The traditional
American folk canon WHEN JESUS WEPT has
been creatively deconstructed so that no more
than two parts are in canon at any given time, with
countermelodies in the other parts filling out the
harmony. This creative arranging allows the text
to be heard clearly throughout. Easily accessible
for small SATB choirs, the piece will be useful for
any size group.

When the Light of Morning Breaks—Pinkzebra.
Subtle choral harmonies begin peacefully as
the lyrics speak of the moments at the quiet
beginning of a fresh new day. Building with
energy and texture, they cry "Here I am!" in an
empowering call to embrace the present and
the future. Beautiful in both the a cappella and
accompanied versions, this is a perfect choice for
graduation and moving-up ceremonies as well as
for general concerts.

words of Fred Rogers, this original concert
work encourages us to speak words of truth

touch; the part is available as a free download

Woodchuck—Mark Burrows. "How much wood
could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could
chuck wood?" Posing this tongue twister and age-
old question, this humorous piece features simple
body percussion and unison lines that repeat in
two- and then optional three-part canon. A lively
section of interactive harmony when counting
and an emphasis on diction are the names of the
game. Sure to be a favorite!

but smile listening to (or singing) this lighthearted
piece, perfect for middle school voices.
