Dawn—Jacob Narverud. Francis Ledwidge's
poem brings a sweetly sentimental tone that
is so well complemented by the lyrical lines
and gorgeous harmonies in this original work.
At once both musically satisfying and accessible,
it offers a chance to help choirs bring maturity
and lyricism to their tone without increasing
the difficulty.

A Departing Blessing—Amelia Ouverson. This
heartfelt piece reminds us that goodbyes are as
filled with gratitude and hope as they are sad.
Great intimacy is achieved in this unaccompanied
setting with the use of solo voices and lush chords
as well as a solitary violin obbligato (or other C
instrument). A simple, folk-like style binds the
work together along with a text inspired by the
traditional Irish Blessing.

Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel—arr. Keith
Christopher. This unison/optional two-part
arrangement of the traditional spiritual is pure
fun! The energetic piece starts in unison with
a statement of the chorus. It is followed by two
catchy verses and choruses, all supported by a
lively accompaniment. The ending crescendos
excitedly until the word "Daniel" is suddenly
whispered dramatically. The Teacher Resource
(sold separately) includes helpful song teaching
steps and colorful classroom visuals.

Dies Irae (Day of Wrath)—David Farrell Smith.
Employing the text from the Requiem Mass,
this dramatic, exciting, rhythmic setting propels
the angular melodies forward. The contrasting,
lyric B section allows for a brief respite and
will challenge the singers to explore color in
tone and expression. This is sure to be a
compelling piece for middle school and young
high school choirs.

Down in the River to Pray—arr. Jace Wittig.
In the SSAA voicing, this piece went viral when
the Colorado All-State Treble Choir sang from
the balconies in a hotel lobby! This a cappella
arrangement of the folk hymn made popular in
the movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" utilizes
body percussion, compelling harmonies, and an
authentic vocal style to create an unforgettable
choral piece. Great to open or close a concert!

El Humo (The Smoke)—Eduardo Cota. Everyday
imagery comes to life; pictures of smoke trailing
from chimneys up to the sky weave through a
charming melody and accompaniment. This is a
great selection for choirs learning how to sing in
two parts, but its poetry and sonority also work
well for older treble groups.

Empire of Blue—Rob Dietz. In a style that is
equal parts contemporary and historic, this unique
concert work employs a variety of vocal styles,
including contemporary a cappella, overtone
singing, vocal jazz, and shape note/sacred harp.
Quoting the folk hymn The Lone Wild Bird, which
grapples with understanding our place in the
world, this piece resonates with a youthful voice
and style that will surely be impactful.

Encourage One Another—Mark Burrows. This
energetic echo song brings out the best in young
mixed voices and offers a joyful message of
friendship and community. Vocal ranges are just
right for changing voices in middle school and
junior high, including optional notes for cambiata.
While loosely based on scripture, the text focuses
on caring qualities and is appropriate for both
sacred and secular settings. Add the optional
djembe, claves, and shaker (parts available
separately) as well as the body percussion cues
for a dynamic and spirited performance.

translates to "Spread love everywhere you go,
unity is love." This piece celebrates the hopeful
sentiments of unity and love through both Swahili
and English lyrics that can be used throughout
the year or to celebrate the Kwanzaa principle of
Umoja (unity). Djembe and soft metal percussion
add flair, and singers can also get in on the fun
with some light body percussion.
