Mechanical Monsters (Flexible Instrumentation)—
Randall D. Standridge. Shambling creatures made of
metal come to life in this eerie offering for beginning
band. The first six notes taught (plus one extra
accidental!) are utilized in a unique fashion to create a
work that sounds much more difficult than it is. Playful
interplay of eighth notes, metallic percussion, and
moments for the winds to "hiss" and play rhythms on
their stands combine to great effect in this flexible work
that is sure to grab your players' attention.

Operation Super Sleuth—Christina Huss. Warning!
This description will self-destruct in thirty seconds! The
excitement of spy and detective movies is translated
to your young band's performance! Beginning with a
brief slow section to set a film noir-esque mood, the
work quickly moves into a faster mode in 3/4 time
as the chase is on! Rhythmic and driving, this work
will provide a great challenge for your developing
musicians! ...3 ...2 ...1 ...BOOM!

Pelican Dance—Steve Dunn. Quirky, fun, and fresh,
this dancelike composition was inspired by the pelicans
observed on the composer's way to work. The opening
motif, played by the entire ensemble in the first
measure, is fundamental to the entire work. Stated in
some form at the beginning of each musical section, it
even appears as a bass line. Performed at one tempo
throughout, this can be used to work on dynamic
contrasts that are so essential in music performance
while also reinforcing how a theme can be changed
and developed throughout a piece. Percussion drives
the energy and lets your percussionists develop their
skills on hand percussion. Enjoy the dance!

Piñata!—William Owens. This spirited, Latin-flavored
piece captures all the excitement of a lively party with a
colorfully decorated piñata as its centerpiece. Despite
using limited ranges and rhythms, the melodies
and rhythms are incredibly engaging, capturing the
spirit of children as they seek to capture the prizes
within! Challenge your motivated percussionists with
the advanced part, or take advantage of the more
accessible one. Either way, it sounds great! (1:30)

Reptilia (Slithering Sixteenths)—Heather Hoefle. It
may be a creeping alligator, but it's not my alligator!
Provide your students practice performing sixteenth
notes at a moderate tempo with this programmatic
piece. Hold on to your quarter notes as the alligator
jaws snap in the percussion section! A great piece to
perform in the middle of your program.

road trip on the legendary Route 66 from Chicago to

signs, and the towns that have since faded following
the end of the fabled highway's era. From the opening
symphonic fanfare to inspiring jazz and everything in
between - including acoustic guitar! - this full production
number is guaranteed to bring down the house! (8:00)

Tadpoles—Randall Standridge. Leap into action with
this fun and imaginative work for beginning bands.
Serving as an introduction to leaps for your developing
ensembles, this piece paints an amusing portrait of
young frogs frolicking and splashing as they learn to
leap, using frog guiros, flexatones, slide whistles, and
trombone glissandi. Several optional parts add to the
flexibility of this work that will help your students get the
"jump" on technical development.

It's "time" for adventure in this unique new suite of
miniatures. Take your young performers on a musical
adventure through the ages while also exploring
different time signatures and styles. Using the range of
the first six notes usually taught to beginning students,
this delightful work is both highly educational and

Too Much Percussion!—Randall Standridge.
According to Randy Standy, there's no such thing as
too much percussion! This delightful pops work for
young band provides a groovy vehicle for drumming
fun for your percussionists and your wind players. A
full band percussion feature, including a very special
triangle moment for the conductor, makes this delightful
work for developing musicians stand out from the pack.

concert, and leave your audience wanting more!

Twisted Tango—Larry Neeck. A fun take on the popul-
ar Latin dance. A tuneful melody, great scoring, and
quirky effects like slide and siren whistles will have your
students having so much fun they won't even realize
they are learning about syncopation and chromaticism.

Valley of Shadows—LeAndre Benton. Starting aggress-
ively with a simple melody and active percussion, this
piece about the adventure of walking through a scary
forested valley lets you introduce programmatic music
to your students in a fun and entertaining way. Along
the journey, they will encounter a snake represented
by a ratchet, and they'll use contemporary techniques
like dissonance, screaming, and clapping. With active
percussion and plenty of rhythmic challenges, this is
at the upper level for a beginning band composition
and is most appropriate for a second-year concert or
advanced first-year band.
