Here's a wonderful take on the group Toto's classic rock tune from the '80s. It's solidly scored throughout and sounds amazingly like the original while remaining accessible for developing jazz bands. With nice dynamic contrasts, an uncomplicated melodic line, and a medium rock groove, this chart is one that younger players can really dig into, yet it will sound mature when performed by a more advanced group. More features include: half-note tempo of 90 bpm; written or ad lib solos for alto sax 1 and trombone 1; trumpet 1 range to written G on top of the staff; and optional parts for flute, clarinet and vibes. It's an ideal opener and a great way for young jazzers to learn about the groove. VE 55.00 Aventuras—Paul Baker. This energetic Latin rock chart features a driving beat and a more relaxed half-time feel. Numerous solo opportunities with written solos are provided along with easy, accessible chord changes. There's four-bar drum solo space as well as ample opportunity to add more Latin percussion. 11403765 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . .ME 45.00 Birdland —Josef Zawinul/arr. Victor Lopez. Just listen to this chart and you know you have to have it as Victor Lopez brings the original Weather Report version to life for jazz ensembles. All the ingredients are here, plus solo space (written or improvised) for alto 1 and/or trumpet 2, nice chord voicings throughout, and the lead trumpet top note is only a written G on top of the staff. John Berry. Originally composed for Weather Report and released in 1967, Joe Zawinul's quintessential jazz fusion standard has been recorded by countless artists through the years. This chart is a slightly truncated version for young players that still retains the dynamic feel and sound of the original. Ideal for young players, it's scored for standard jazz ensemble with no solos but is playable with optional reduced or expanded instrumentations. From Hancock's famous Headhunter recording, here is a great opportunity to play the biggest jazz-rock hit of all time.
