My Funny Valentine—Richard Rodgers/
arr. Mike Smukal. Richard Rodgers and Lorenz
Hart gave the jazz world this beautiful ballad, and
arranger Mike Smukal sets it as a lush trumpet or
flugelhorn solo feature. The entire solo is notated and
can effectively be performed with no improvisation.
It also features a wonderful double-time section
with everything written out, easy ranges, some
nice substitute chords and lush harmonies. This
arrangement includes optional parts for flute, horn
in F, baritone and tuba. This is an exceptional chart
at an accessible level! Highly recommended!

Mike Kamuf. Oh yeah! This is a crowd pleaser

hip, groovy— call it what you want, this chart is
excellent in every way... and if you have a decent
bari player, he or she will really love this one.
There are written solos for alto and tenor sax, a
stop-time without rhythm section for the saxes,
a fantastic interlude section, a monster shout
chorus, and some short drum fills... what's not

may have heard Basie's band play this great Neal
Hefti swinger, but this version is very accessible
for younger players at around 166 bpm. The

sax soli, and well-notated rhythm section parts.

M E D I U M
Arnge Drank (Orange Juice with an
Attitude)—Paul Baker. Wow... orange drink with
an attitude! Texas writer Paul Baker presents an
outstanding funk chart beginning with a piano riff
to set up the rhythm groove before the trumpet
and altos hit with the melody. Trombones and
low saxes support with counterpoint. After the
trombones take it through the bridge the saxes
again state the melody in a dramatic stop time
section that moves into the trumpet and trombone
solos. After a drum solo, the bari and bass
trombone shine as they set the funky foundation
for the shout chorus. A return of the piano riff sets
up the final melodic statement and dramatic coda.
Trumpet range to written High C. Trombone to G.
Pure fun, and highly recommended!

Berg. If you've got a strong bassist, this is your
showstopper! This chart, made famous by bass
virtuoso Jaco Pastorius, gets kicking with a
killer gospel chorale, but is soon interrupted by
one of the funkiest bass lines ever played! Soon
the entire band is in on it with a Tower of Power-

chart with an infectious beat, popping bass, cool
sax licks and hard brass pops. If you've tried
Jeff's other funk charts, you're going to want
this one. And if you haven't, you'd better get

Holmes. From the Broadway musical "The Roar
of the Greasepaint - The Smell of the Crowd," this
fabulous standard is popular again with a stunning

sure to bring down the house. It can also be used

Feels So Good—Chuck Mangione/arr. Victor
Lopez. Only rarely does a jazz tune cross over
to the pop charts the way this Chuck Mangione
classic did back in the seventies! Flugelhorn solo
on the 1st trumpet part is featured throughout with
the distinctive melody and then with a written or
ad lib solo along with a tenor solo. The flugelhorn
solo range is up to an optional written high C,
but the solo is cued on the 1st tenor part as well.
Victor's arrangement brings this contemporary
gem within the range of the developing trumpet
player without losing any of the hip appeal of
the original. Here's a perennially appealing,
samba/rock chart that will provide outstanding
performance opportunities for your band and
soloist! Highly recommended!

Honk—Jeff Jarvis. Ever since the widespread
popularity of the Jeff Jarvis funk original
Critical Mass, requests for a sequel have
been pouring in. At last, Jeff has composed
and arranged Honk, with all the characteristics
that made its predecessor such a hit with jazz
ensembles, only at a slightly more accessible
level. Like Critical Mass, Honk begins with a
cool sax section introduction, clearly placing
your baritone saxophonist in the limelight, but
without excessive technical demands. Everyone
has interesting and challenging parts to play
throughout and the modulation near the end
gives it an extra, added lift. The solos are
open and the backgrounds can be varied by
instrumentation. This one is hot from beginning
to end! Very highly recommended!
