David M. Cherwien. This hymn has been
expanded from the original setting, creating
a tender anthem with optional flute, ideal
for communion and sacramental use. The
comforting tune draws the listener in and

At the Table of the Lord—Jay Althouse.
This simple, meditative song of remembrance
makes a moving selection for the observance of
the Lord's supper. The gentle folk-like melody is
accompanied by a transparent piano part and the
effective text evokes images of the Eucharist.
"At the table of the Lord, in thanksgiving, we have
come to drink the wine which is poured.
We remember Him, who died for us, now living.
We remember Christ our Lord."

Bread of Heaven—Bill Boocock.
Simple part writing unfolds in this meaningful
communion setting. Each of the opening verses
represents an element of the Lord's table - bread
of heaven and wine of heaven - and the third
verse combines both elements in a reminder of
the purpose of communion: that Christ is the vine,
and we are the branches. The music is lyrical
and flowing, with supportive accompaniment,
accessible ranges, and tuneful melody.

Bread of Heaven—Karen Marrolli.
While an obvious choice for a communion
anthem, the text based on John 6:33 takes us
beyond the immediate table into the world outside.
Pleading with the "Holy Bread of Heaven" for
peace, justice, unity, and an end to suffering
and violence, this anthem is very timely for our
world situation. The E minor tonality is somber
yet hopeful, the piano accompaniment simple but
supportive.

Break the Bread, Pour the Wine—
Mark Hayes. Flowing motion, lyrical melody and
a colorful instrumental obbligato join forces to
create a delightful anthem for Communion. The
text speaks of our spirits being restored through
the bread and wine and of the forgiveness that we
receive by it. Perfect for Maundy Thursday or any
time of year, this will be an anthem that is returned
to time and time again!

Come Before the Table—Karen Marrolli.
The music for this communion text is constructed
with a duet or semi-chorus singing above a choir
ostinato, a cappella with hand drum, creating a
multicultural, polyrhythmic effect. The layered
vocal construction is fun to teach and sing. The
middle section includes the 17th century chant,
Adoro te devote.

Communion Prayer—Larry Shackley.
Two important texts celebrating the Lord's
Table are set in this anthem. An inventive piano
accompaniment propels the Bread of the World
text forward, then a middle section in a new key
explores the For the Bread Which You Have
Broken text. The piece returns to the first key
with confident unison singing, followed by an
expressively painted choral ending.

Day of Arising—Carl Schalk/
arr. Michael Burkhardt. This accessible
arrangement of Carl Schalk's hymn tune,
RAABE,
is perfect for the smaller choir with optional
congregational singing. Susan Palo Cherwien's
text compares the story of Jesus's appearance
to the disciples on the roadway with the way in
which Christ is revealed to us in the breaking of
bread. Organ accompaniment and optional oboe
or clarinet are very effective.

Do This and Remember—Brad Nix.
In this communion anthem we are taken into
the heart of the sacrament. The original melody,
somber and yet hopeful, combines perfectly with
the text to create a breathtaking anthem. Your
congregation will be drawn into grateful reflection
as the choir passionately proclaims, "Death is not
the final answer, all who feast on me will live!"
