CHRISTMAS ANTHEMS
The Christmas Lamb—Brian L. Hanson.
This poignant 19th-century text tells of God's
redemptive work, beginning with Advent and
Christmas and finishing with Easter. The setting
is crafted with swelling choral cadences and
supported by a resonant piano accompaniment.
A wonderful selection for Advent 4, Christmas
Eve, and Christmas programs.

A Christmas Meditation (Away in a Manger)
—arr. Mack Wilberg. Based on the tune
CRADLE SONG, this wordless piece (the choir
hums over lush accompaniment) was written as
underscoring for a reading of the Nativity story
(Luke 2:1, 3-14). In the tradition of incidental
music, this piece may be used in a variety
of ways: as a processional, as a transition
between other works, or as background for
spoken words and images. Chamber orchestra
parts are available on rental.

Christmas Sanctus—Lee Dengler & Susan
Naus Dengler. This compelling anthem
combines the tender beauty of the Nativity
story with the age old grandeur of the Sanctus
text. The music weds the simplicity of the
stable in Bethlehem to a deeply worshipful
exaltation of the promised Savior. It builds
in intensity through the final refrain, with an
optional soprano descant which enhances
its brilliance and then ends with an intimate,
quiet final statement reflecting the awe felt
by all who experience Christ's presence
on earth.

Et in Terra Pax—John Purifoy. The angel's
powerful proclamation "peace on earth" is

Fantasia on Christmas Carols—Ralph
Vaughan Williams. A fantasia in the truest
sense, this choral tapestry of English carols
was composed in 1912 after Vaughan
Williams had completed the scores for his first
symphony (The Sea), and the Tallis Fantasia.
In this relatively short work for baritone soloist,
chorus and orchestra, we find the essence of
Vaughan Williams' style and compositional
mastery - hallmarks of a richly productive
artistic output that defined a nationalist
movement in music that continues to this
day. Centered on four traditional carols: The
Truth Sent from Above; Come All You Worthy
Gentlemen; On Christmas Night and There Is
a Fountain, it also features fragments of other
well-known carol tunes.

Far Away in a Manger—Kevin Keil. Two
well-known hymn tunes for the carol Away in
a Manger,
CRADLE SONG and MUELLER, are
creatively and effectively brought together in
this compact arrangement. Almost a partner
song, an original refrain is presented followed
by alternating lines of the two carol melodies
which then come together at the end. This
anthem is ideal for smaller choirs and
appealing to the listener, making this a favored
addition to any choir's repertoire.
