Allegro Moderato (from Symphony No. 3)

Monday. This movement of the famous
"Organ Symphony" includes two of the most
memorable themes ever penned by Saint-
Saens. This arrangement includes the highly
energetic string theme and the beautiful fugue
based on his four-note theme which cycles
throughout the entire symphony. The two
contrasting sections of this arrangement offer
two extremes of bowing style: one requiring
heavy strokes at the frog and the other using
legato, expressive, full bowing.

Apocalyptic (Finale from Symphony No. 8)
—Anton Bruckner/arr. Kirk Moss. All the
power and force of the Finale of Bruckner's
Eighth Symphony is masterfully captured in
this authentic and first-ever arrangement for
string orchestra. Mature players will have
the opportunity to expand on their shifting
and vibrato technique as well as overall
musicianship by exploring varying bow weights
and speeds to create the wide variety of tone
and dynamics that are required. An optional

Aurora's March (Prologue from Sleeping

Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky's three masterpiece
ballet scores, including Sleeping Beauty,
are known for their timeless music. This
arrangement for string orchestra captures
the enduring melodies and great depth
of Tchaikovsky's genius. Because much
of Tchaikovsky's style is not written with
articulations, students will need assistance
with the bow stroke in order to perform this
incredible piece. This march, which follows the
overture in the ballet, was renamed Aurora's
March for this arrangement.

Capriccio Espagnol—Nikolai Rimsky-
Korsakov/arr. Robert D. McCashin. This
resetting for string orchestra has successfully
kept the composer's intent, and to a great
extent, the sounds and colors of the
original orchestration. While requiring some
substantial string forces, it's fully approachable
by able high school groups. It consists of five
connected movements based on Spanish
themes. A terrific addition as a primary work for
any concert!

Fidelio Overture—Ludwig van Beethoven/arr.
Todd Parrish. The Fidelio Overture was written
in 1814 to open Beethoven's only opera by the
same name. This string orchestra arrangement
is transposed from the original E major to the
more approachable key of D major. It retains
the original opening which alternates between
powerful majestic bursts and lyrical harmonic
progressions, finishing with the energetic
presto to the end. Optional timpani gives this
arrangement a symphonic quality that closely
resembles the original.
