FOLK & MULTICULTURAL easy / medium-easy
Kentucky Mountain Hoedown—arr. Mekel
Rogers. A lively folk dance arranged for
young orchestra musicians. The main theme
is based on the eastern Kentucky folk tune
Old Joe Clark, a song about a 19th-century
Kentucky mountaineer, in an energetic and
lively dance style throughout. An optional
woodblock part is included to evoke the
sound of clog dancing.

La Valentina—arr. Jorge Vargas. Written as a
tribute to Valentina Ramirez Avitia, who fought in
the Mexican Revolution at a time when women
were not allowed in the Mexican military, this
folk song tat is played by many mariachi groups
in Mexico and across the United States. She
wore her brother's clothes, hid her hair, and
used the name Juan Ramirez - and gained
the rank of lieutenant. Although this story feels
familiar, this full and lush arrangement is fresh
and engaging for all students!
11510722 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .50.00

Scarborough Fair—Traditional/arr. Brian
Balmages. The aching emotion in this
interpretation of Scarborough Fair is a genuine
treat for young string groups. The lyrics of the
16th century (possibly older) ballad relates a
heartsick couple proposing impossible tasks to
prove unending love to one another. Embodied
with simple counter lines, harmonies, and
dynamic range, Brian Balmages paints
an image of youthful love and its inherent
theatrics. Excellent!
10091946 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .40.00
A Sertaneja—Fransisca Chiquinha Gonzaga/
arr. Dion Morales. Originally composed for
voice and piano, this arrangement musically
paints a picture of the composer's love of
"the hinterland - the land behind the body of
water," Rio de Janeiro. Flowing slurs, dotted
rhythms, 3/4 time in D minor, and the passing
of the melody between the strings celebrate
the lapping waters around Rio de Janeiro
and a graceful Brazilian dance by one of
its beloved composers. Students will love
performing this!
11399753 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .35.00
Shaker Hymn—arr. John O'Reilly. Based on
the hymn 'Tis the Gift to be Simple (used in
Aaron Copland's "Appalachian Spring"), this
arrangement is a superb vehicle for exploring
early American music and its links to the
present. Skillfully arranged, this selection is
correlated with Strictly Strings, Book 1, page 34.
2375491 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .46.00
Simple Gifts—Joseph Brackett/arr. Carrie
Lane Gruselle. Lighthearted and energetic,
this arrangement of Simple Gifts suggests
a dance-like character. With its familiar and
captivating tune supported by a gentle but
persistent underlying rhythmic motif, students
will study balance of sound and staccato and
legato bowing styles.
10592167 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .45.00
South African Groove (after Siyahamba)—
arr. Mekel Rogers. The South African hymn
Siyahamba serves as the basis for this
happy interpretation of the famous African
folk song. Translated, the word means "We
are marching." The composition can be
performed by strings alone, but the optional
addition of claves and congas adds another
layer of authenticity to the music. An excellent
opportunity to expose students to world music
as well as dotted and syncopated rhythms.
11566678 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .50.00
Stone Mountain Stomp—Carl Strommen.
This one stands out in the "fiddle tune"
category. Carl Strommen has managed to take
some of the sounds of Southern fiddling and
mix them with a Western "Copland-esque" style
and make something really special. Another
great feature of this one is that the violas and
low strings all get a chance at some fiddling.
2472094 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .53.00
Tango Rio—David Hinds. The zesty
syncopated rhythms of the tango are fully
explored in this well-crafted composition. All
the sections of the orchestra have a turn in the
spotlight as the piece unfolds.
11536262 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .60.00
Variations on an Irish Tune—Brian
Balmages. Based on Thomas Moore's famous
song The Minstrel Boy, this work uses the full
gamut of styles and techniques to showcase
your ensemble. In three distinct variations,
lyrical phrasing, energetic rhythms, and fiddle
styles ultimately lead to an exciting conclusion.
10008688 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .55.00
Where the River Shannon Flows—James
I. Russell/arr. Brian Balmages. Based on the
emotional Irish song, this thoughtful setting
paints a picture of a man dreaming of the day
he can return home. At times, the piece feels
more like a fantasy than an arrangement as
the melody weaves through an increasingly
complex series of textures and harmonies
before returning to the plaintive sounds of
the opening.
10877071 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .40.00
Zira! Zira!—arr. Kathryn Griesinger. This

(Viola in treble clef) for flexibility. Powerful!

it comes time to celebrate the musical colors
of Africa, combine the forces of your string
group with your percussion ensemble on
this stylish concert work for the developing
ensemble. Repetitive rhythms and a catchy
melodic hook propel the piece forward as
it develops momentum and dramatic flair.

percussion for an even more authentic
timbre. A guaranteed favorite!

Ashokan Farewell (from "The Civil War")—
Jay Ungar/arr. Calvin Custer. The simple,
memorable theme from the acclaimed PBS
series makes excellent concert fare. Calvin
Custer's realistic treatment includes the easy
violin solo, piano and percussion. This is
technically quite easy, but very emotional.
2238723 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .54.00
Blue-Fire Fiddler—Soon Hee Newbold. This
kickin' fiddle tune is energetic, exciting and
fun. The fast and furious fiddling sounds much
harder than it really is. Riffs, finger patterns
and bowings are very idiomatic and lend
themselves to fast playing. This is sure to be
the hit of the concert!
2474322 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .60.00
Chinese Folk Song Suite—arr. Chen Yi.
Originally set for vocal ensemble, three songs

this beautiful Chinese folk music to even more
young musicians. The celebratory Fengyang
Song is from Anhui province, the lyrical love
song Flowing Stream is from Yunnan province,
and Mayila comes from the ethnic group known
as Kazakhs.

syncopated patterns of later sections. The
exotic harmonies are hypnotic.
11503691 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .65.00

music of Spain, Central and South America. All
sections get to play both the melody and the
driving accompaniment rhythms.
10872102 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .50.00
Doraji—arr. Ben Snoek. This popular Korean
folk song is named for the Platycodon
grandiflorus or balloon flower. This beautiful
setting features lush scoring, flowing
counterlines, dramatic phrasing, and seamlessly
passes the melody among the entire ensemble.
An excellent multicultural piece that will delight
musicians and concertgoers.
11339410 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . .60.00
Ear-igami—Richard Meyer. Ear-igami is
a fascinating musical tribute to the ancient
Japanese art of paper folding. Instead of a
bow, each performer uses a piece of paper
to make sounds and to "play" their instrument.
Your audience will be entranced as they watch
and hear the variety of effects possible in this
charming set of pentatonic variations. A unique
concert selection!
10066927 String Orchestra,
Percussion Optional . . . . . .60.00
