The melody uses the pentatonic scale and is very simple in nature. The variations expand on fragments of the original tune in a variety of tempi and styles that make each new change thrilling! Brian Balmages. This gorgeous fantasy is based on the well-known Hawaiian song Aloha 'Oe, written by Queen Lili'uokalani. Translated as "Farewell to Thee," it works extremely well both as a lyrical portion of a program or as a part of an emotional send-off to celebrate graduating students. Beautiful harmonic twists are masterfully intertwined in a work that is extremely accessible to younger students yet sounds mature enough to be enjoyed by more accomplished ensembles. A long-time favorite for festival and contest, Percy Fletcher's two-movement suite has been a choice teaching piece for school orchestras.
