Malagueña (from "Andalucia Suite")—
Ernesto Lecuona/arr. Douglas E. Wagner.
The piano suite "Andalucia" (sometimes
referred to as Suite Española) is by far
Ernesto Lecuona's most performed and
remembered work, especially the last of its six
movements, Malagueña, scored here for string
orchestra. The suite celebrates Andalusia, the
southernmost region of mainland Spain, and,
more notably, the vibrant culture of those who
live there. This arrangement captures all of the
passion of the original and will be perfect for
concert or contest. (3:15)

Milonga del Angel—Astor Piazzolla/arr.
Jim Palmer. This lyrical arrangement of an
Argentinian tango is a wonderful introduction
to the music of Astor Piazzolla. The melody
is first introduced by the violas and then
passed smoothly to the first violins. Along with
beautiful harmonies, interesting rhythms, and
the variety of dynamics, the piece includes
many opportunities to teach shifting, glissando,
balance, and phrasing. A perfect choice for
festival or any concert performance.

Por una Cabeza—Carlos Gardel/arr.
Christopher Selby. Por una Cabeza is a
popular tango that originally appeared as a
song written in 1935 by composer Carlos
Gardel. It has appeared in a number of films,
including Steven Spielberg's "Schindler's List."
This arrangement for string orchestra explores
a number of musical and technical elements,
including dynamic contrast, major and minor
tonalities, arco and pizzicato technique, varied
articulation, and musical form.

Prelude and Fiesta—Erik Morales. Exploring
rhythms and chord changes emblematic of
Afro-Cuban music, this original work moves
from a spicy ballad to a depiction of a fiery Latin
street festival. A full percussion section is used
but also includes condensed parts that only use
two players. Consider opening it up for soloists
to shine. Stunning! (4:50)

Romanian Folk Dances—Bela Bartok/arr.

Air Warriors—Erica Donahoe. With driving
bass lines and sweeping melodies, this piece
captures the warrior ethos of our many service
members and veterans of the United States Air
Force. Students will love the rhythmic drive of
the low string parts, and all performers get a
chance to shine in the melodic sections. Written
by USAF veteran (and veteran orchestra
director) Erica Donahoe, Air Warriors is a great
way to honor the veterans in your community!

American Frontier—Joshua Reznicow.
Wonderfully written, this Americana-sounding
original work uses various ensemble
configurations from within the string orchestra.
Solo lines, quartet, quintet, and sectional soli
all help to make up the overall design and
orchestral colors of the piece. Juxtaposed to
this, large divisi string writing is used to help
balance the smaller ensemble writing within
the score. The work is inspired by images
of a Western frontier filled with rolling fields,
mountains, and sunsets along with subtle
character-filled details that have a forward and
fast-moving feel.

American Patrol—F.W. Meacham/arr.
Steven L. Rosenhaus. Originally a piano piece
by composer F.W. Meacham written in 1885,
this piece depicts the approach, passing, and
fading away into the distance of a military unit.
While there are many versions of this popular
piece, including one by the famous Glenn Miller
Orchestra, this arrangement is a toe-tapping
rendition for string orchestra that will impress
your audiences.

American Sketches (a Fantasy for String
Orchestra)—Joshua Reznicow. A rousing
concert closer, this work will challenge all
sections with a wide range (every part shifts),
running passage work, trills, and syncopated
rhythms. The B section, a lyric waltz theme,
shows off the principal players with extended
solos. The return of the A section superimposes
the waltz melody on the original syncopated
theme for a wonderful conclusion.

to the people we admire, whether it be family

country, this piece in E minor uses easy
rhythms, pizzicato, some divisi in the cello part,

All players get melody lines and the violin 2 part
doubles the viola. Sounds harder than it is!
