Sea of Stars—Liam Ramsey-White. The
"Sea of Stars" on the island of Vaadhoo
in Maldives is famous for its unique
bioluminescence. As the waves break
against the shore, the water turns a sparkling
blue, appearing as stars reflected in the
water. The opening of this piece imitates
the shimmering water as a nostalgic motif
is presented by a solo cello over delicate
harmonics and tremolo. The piece swells,
ebbs, and flows with a beautiful theme that
ends as quietly and magically as it started.

Terrestrial Fire—Kathryn Griesinger. In ancient
Mayan ruins, carvings of the jaguar are still
visible today. They tell a story of the powerful cat
whose eyes reflect in the night, leading it to be
named the "god of terrestrial fire." The energetic

through the wild jungles with driving rhythmic
accompaniments in the cellos and basses. The
melody runs and leaps, shifting modally on its
way to a violin solo with percussive effects in
other sections. Dark and exciting!
