Colorado River Adventure—Doug Spata.
A strong driving main theme contrasted with
a flowing B melody will have your audience
and musicians feeling the exciting rush of
being carried by the Colorado River's raging
rapids, then the gentle peace of floating in
slower currents as the river levels off. Excellent
for reinforcing sixteenth-note rhythms, and
your low strings will love the great idiomatic

Compassion—Rossano Galante. Written in
memory of a 14-year-old boy who lost his life,
this emotional, lyrical selection sets the tone for
love and loss. The introduction incorporates a
gentle string passage featuring a chordal and
cerebral texture. The violins state the main
theme, accompanied by lush string harmony.
The accompaniment becomes rhythmically
busier as the piece develops, incorporating
arpeggiations and ostinati. After reaching its
climax, the composition concludes just as it
began, with quiet and chordal strings, bringing

Danse (from "African Suite")—Samuel
Coleridge-Taylor/arr. Kirk Moss. The artistic
turning point of English composer Samuel
Coleridge-Taylor's career happened in his
twenties when he met the African-American
poet Paul Laurence Dunbar. Dunbar influenced
the young composer to concentrate on his
African heritage. Originally composed for
piano as the final movement of "African Suite,"
Danse begins with two introductory chords
followed by energetic swinging rhythms and
repeated angular melodies. Students will love
the moods in this festive overture, evocative of
later Broadway musicals.
