First made famous by Monteverdi, Torquato Tasso's 16th-century poem is given a modern setting for a cappella mixed chorus. Layered entrances and lively mixed-meter rhythms paint a picture for the listener of waves and flora moving in the breeze. A perfect choice for advanced ensembles that want a fresh take on a classic choral text! 11564926 SATB divisi. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3.25 Edge of Dawn—Nicholas Ryan Kelly. Perfect for concerts themed on darkness and light, this piece is based on the second half of a poem by Lola Ridge, when dawn starts to break and the natural world slowly comes alive. Composed for a wedding, this selection is part of "To Sing of Love: A Triptych." It is a moving tribute to the love that flows from above as well as between all of humanity. The lush harmonies, textures, and violin obbligato beautifully cradle the text from medieval mystic Mechthild of Magdeburg (1207-1297). 11593426 SATB divisi, or SSAATTBB, w/ Solo Violin . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.65 Elemental—Linda Kachelmeier. This innovative work tackles some of the most pressing environmental crises in recent history. The choir sets the scene with an urgent ostinato before shifting to storytelling mode, giving details of natural disasters and their effect on the planet. Each voice part portrays a different element, using singing, stomping, breath, sandpaper, and pouring water to elicit the sounds of the earth. The final line states, "We are in a new abnormal." An evocative work for advanced choir. 11569838 SATB divisi. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.75 Farewell—Juls Scherle. This piece uses text from Requiem Aeternam. Using the ABA form, the B section temporarily transports the listener to a dreamlike state; the music features a duet between alto saxophone and soprano, while the remaining voices blur into the background as if half awake (and half asleep). The alto saxophone gesture throughout the work uses a variety of motivic ideas, from short fragmentary utterances to more florid lines, to sustain threadlike durations that tie the music together between phrases. The A sections feature homophonic chorale writing, using varying phrase lengths and slight variations in the motivic idea to bring out the poignancy and imagery of the Joyce text. 11593428 SATB w/ Saxophone or Clarinet Obbligato . . . . . . . . . . . 2.65 Fyer, Fyer!—Brian Sidders. Thomas Morley's Renaissance madrigal text is given a fresh setting for a cappella mixed chorus.
