and uses both treble choir as well as SATB
chorus. The percussion parts are included
in the score and add a great deal to this
lively piece. Congregation and choir alike
will enjoy this one.

Gesu Bambino—arr. John Leavitt. A
quint-essential Christmas classic is skillfully

concert halls and sanctuaries, it is faithful
to the original, has stellar part-writing, and

The Gift of Grace—arr. Sean Paul. Based
on
COVENTRY CAROL, this dynamic setting
opens with dramatic piano and women on
"oo." SATB voices enter unaccompanied
with the Christmas verse. The piano returns
with the women for verse 2, whose transition
to "oo" marks the return of the men and then
the whole choir. The piano swells and then
the choir enters quietly, only to build to a
climax for the resurrection text which closes
the
piece.

Gloria and Alleluia—Ruth Elaine Schram.
Two short contrasting movements may
either stand on their own or combine into
one longer setting. The Gloria setting is
upbeat, rhythmic, and fanfare-like, while
the Alleluia is quiet, introspective and set
in a minor key. Both are lovely a cappella
settings that are achievable by choirs in a
school, church or community setting.

Gloria in Excelsis Deo!—arr. Lloyd
Larson. This joyous Christmas anthem is
based upon the carol tune
BRING A TORCH
paired with wonderful new lyrics. After two
verses, the hymn tune
HYFRYDOL enters to
provide contrast and a key change before
the carol returns as the finale. The choral
texture nicely alternates unison with four-
part vocals, and the optional orchestration
adds to the celebration.

The Hands That First Held Mary's
Child—Dan Forrest. An incredible text tells
the extraordinary story of a Child, whose
journey begins in Bethlehem, with the
weathered hands of a carpenter holding
his newborn son. "The hands that first held
Mary's child were hard from working wood.
From boards they sawed and planed and
filed and splinters they withstood. This day
they gripped no tool of steel, they drove no
iron nail, but cradled from the head to heel
our Lord, newborn and frail."
