a great challenge for advanced groups to
take on.

wonderful chart that will satisfy any mature
band. As recorded by Gordon Goodwin's

Fill in the Gap—Len Pierro.
A hard-swinging sax soli kicks off this
dynamic chart before the main head is
picked up by fourth trumpet and lead alto
sax. Solo changes are included for alto sax
and trumpet. Lead trumpet plays a high E,
and the lead trombone plays a high B-flat.
This is a great chart for the more advanced
ensemble.

Giant Steps—John Coltrane/arr. Mark
Taylor. Here's a fresh take on a traditional
jazz standard. The style is still up-tempo
swing, and the saxes maintain a fair share
of the spotlight along with ensemble hits
and solo spots for drums; however, there
is a brief excursion into 5/4 and a few
other meter surprises that help give this
outstanding chart a contemporary edge.
Highly recommended!

Groove Merchant (Vanguard Jazz
Orchestra Signature Edition)—Jerome
Richardson/arr. Thad Jones. As recorded
by the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra

Inner Urge—Joe Henderson/arr. Mark
Taylor. Composed by jazz legend Joe
Henderson, this up-tempo burner from Mark
Taylor features a mesmerizing groove and
masterful scoring. The rhythm section sets
the groove and then a trio of tenor, guitar
and vibes carries the melody, while layers
of sound are gradually added creating a
powerhouse effect. Solo space is included
for tenor saxophone and guitar, and there
are feature spots for the brass section and
later the saxophones. A great chart on a
great tune!

Rabble Rouser—Billy Byers/ed. Bob
Curnow. The Count Basie Orchestra has
been doing "barn burner" charts better than
almost any other big band. This Billy Byers
original starts out hot and never cools down.
The tenor saxophone is the chosen soloist,
and the full ensemble writing just keeps on
keepin' on. Talk about lifting your audience
out of their chairs - Wow! This one will do it.

Rhapsody in Blue—George Gershwin/
arr. Gordon Goodwin. This is a tour-de-
force arrangement by Gordon Goodwin of
Gershwins's masterpiece. If you can cut it,
then play it because it will truly warrant a
standing ovation. The sax doubles call for
piccolo (alto 1), clarinet/flute (alto 2) and
bass clarinet (bari). The second alto part
has the well-known clarinet solo. This chart
has it all...the thematic material, swing, key
changes, solo space for alto, tenor, bari,
trumpet and trombone and lead trumpet
range to written high F. The percussion
part calls for mallets and tympani. Overall, a
grasp of both jazz and classical concepts will
make this chart stand apart from anything
else. As recorded by the Big Phat Band.

The Rotten Kid—Buddy Greco/arr. Dick
Grove. As recorded by the Buddy Rich
Big Band on the album The New One, this
great arrangement is full of fire and energy.
Set as an up-tempo shuffle, it's a wonderful
chart to feature lots of soloists along with
dynamic ensemble writing throughout.
There's solo space for alto saxophone,
tenor saxophone and trombone, allowing
each to blow as long as they would like.

Goodwin. A few twists and turns added to
the original Benny Goodman swing version
make this chart a definite crowd and band
pleaser. Gordon Goodwin's arrangement
features a clarinet part and an alternate
alto 1 part in lieu of clarinet. Solo changes
are provided for all saxophone parts and
clarinet, and the lead trumpet range is
to high F-sharp. While not recorded by
Goodwin's Big Phat Band, it's a staple of
the band's library and is played often in live
performances. It's a wonderful rendition of
this big band classic!

Skyliner—Charlie Barnet/arr. Sammy
Nestico. As a tribute to Charlie Barnet's
signature tune here is a stunning flag-waver
from the master himself. Sammy joined
the Charlie Barnet band on trombone in
1946, and he specifically chose this tune
to "give it a new suit of clothes." No solos
are required, but this powerhouse chart
features a workout for every section of the
band. Alto Sax 1 doubles on Soprano Sax.
