Afternoon—Pat Metheny/arr. Bob
Curnow. Here is a slow, swinging,
lovely, warm, relaxed chart in the style
of that famous Neal Hefti swing ballad!
The arrangement is subtle and easy to
play, and there are not a lot of pieces
by Pat Metheny that swing in this way.
The arrangement suggests flugelhorns
throughout, although trumpets would
work just fine. There is solo space for alto
saxophone and trumpet/flugel. Very nice!

Angel Eyes—Matt Dennis/arr. Carl
Strommen. Oh, yes! This is a superb
setting of the iconic jazz ballad that features
the alto sax star in your band. The alto
solo is mostly written with opportunities
to improvise around the melody, and the
ensemble gets their chance in the spotlight
with some fine full-band passages. The
trumpet 1 range is to written E top space
with some optional octave-up sections if
desired. At 76 bpm, this chart will allow your
alto soloist to shine!

At Last—Harry Warren/arr. Dave Mills.
This beautiful ballad made famous by the
great Etta James makes a perfect change
of pace for any concert. Featuring a sultry
tenor saxophone solo sprinkled with
melodic replies from other sections and lush
chords, this one really dazzles. There are
improvised solos for piano and tenor sax
before the full ensemble returns to close out
this dreamy ballad. Highly recommended!

Simon/arr. Paul Baker. Paul Simon's soulful
rock ballad is set here at 88 bpm, and as
arranged by Paul Baker is sure to please!
The melody is first stated by trumpet 2 and
tenor sax, there are no improvised solos,
and the trumpet 1 range is to written G
on top of the staff. This chart also features
great dynamic contrasts and a satisfying
vamp toward the end. Optional wind and

Pathways to Parker (The Improvisational Patterns of Charlie Parker)—Dr. W. Terry Rowlyk.
This book was created to catalog the melodic pattern material performed by Charlie Parker for over sixty of his
transcribed solos. It also comes with an app called Pathways to Parker. The app mirrors the book to make it
convenient for students to download onto electronic devices. The patterns are organized by the key and chord
type they were originally performed in. The performer may use the patterns at their discretion - in the original key,
or transpose them as needed. The teacher may use these patterns in a number of creative ways: as instrumental
sight-reading material; composition ideas; for examples of what musical ideas will work over an existing chord
change; as starting points for students to creatively connect the patterns in order to expand their music vocabulary;
as starting points for the development of written solos within the developing jazz band; analysis of the most widely
used key and chord centers in Parker's repertoire; abstraction and insertion of Parker's vocabulary into existing
solos to create new ones; and providing new source material for the professional musician who would like to
expand their jazz vocabulary. All patterns are one measure in length. Patterns may be joined together as the
improviser sees fit; however, proper voice leading and chaining of patterns will produce more musical ideas.
