Cityscapes—Rob Romeyn. A brilliantly
programmatic and celebratory concert
opener for mature ensembles. Audiences

Climbing Quandary—Robert Sheldon.
One of the most popular hikes in the Rocky
Mountains is a climb up to Quandary Peak
in Colorado, so named due to the mineral
outcroppings that confused prospectors
while searching for silver in the 1860s.
One of the 58 14ers in Colorado (mountain
peaks above 14,000 feet), it is known as
one of the easier climbs and consequently
very popular. Enlist your art department
to have students display pictures of their
mountain artwork during performance, or
project images of Quandary Peak, many of
which can be found online and royalty-free.

Colossus—Brian Beck. Drama and
excitement right from the start: a scene
of gladiators preparing for combat and
entering the ring. Fanfares alert the

arena. Challenge your young band with
dynamic changes, rhythmic intensity, and
some independent playing. Well worth the

Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing—
arr. Randall D. Standridge. Standridge
has arranged this reverent and somewhat
sad-sounding hymn in honor of the life and
influence of his grandmother, who passed
away in 2012. Moving from moments of
quiet beauty though hugely magnificent
waves of sound, this compelling piece is
a great example of the expressiveness
and power that can be achieved by a fine
concert band work. The final statement of
the melody by a solo clarinet wraps up this
memorable hymn-tune arrangement in a
reverent, quiet way.

returning to one's place of origin after a long
absence. Coming home signifies more than
just physical return; it embodies a rush of
happiness and anticipation, a reconnection

of being in a space that feels like one's
own. The music captures the essence of
finding solace in the familiar, reuniting with
loved ones, and enjoying the comforts that
home provides. It's not just about returning
to a physical space, it's more about

The Country Club Stomp! (Flexible
Instrumentation)—JaRod Hall. Experience
a New Orleans vibe with this exciting,
parade-inspired crowd pleaser! The lively
work is based on an infectious rhythmic
groove and spirited melody. Elements of
jazz as well as a strong reference to the
West African circle dances from which
this music evolved are used effectively.
Stellar writing that is fun, catchy, and
informative! With this flexible arrangement,
conductors no longer need to choose
between function and texture. Ensembles
with instrumentation challenges still have
numerous options to cover all parts, yet
orchestration is elevated significantly to
be faithful to the composer's original intent.
Musicians have more opportunities to rest,
and timbre once again becomes a central
element of the work. It's the best of both
worlds: flexible and colorful! (3:00)

DarkHeart (Escape from DarkHeart
Castle)—Randall D. Standridge. The
final movement of "The Darklands
Symphony"wraps the work up in a very
gripping way, musically depicting a daring
escape from the castle DarkHeart. Its
dark, brooding nature is portrayed by the
driving rhythms, dissonances and trills. The
plainchant Dies Irae is used prominently
as thematic material that ties the entire
symphony together. DarkHeart can very
successfully be performed as a standalone
work. Menacing!
