Woodlands Overture—Brian Balmages.
Showcase every section of the concert
band with this musical celebration! After
a tutti introduction, the brass section
has a rhythmic, harmonically vibrant
passage. Woodwinds then have beautiful
lyrical lines, while percussionists provide
interludes throughout the entire work. The
full ensemble then races toward a powerful
conclusion. (6:10)

Antarktos—David Jones. Explore the
breathtaking, untamed beauty of Earth's
southernmost continent. Inspired by
the landscapes and diverse wildlife of
Antarctica, this piece evokes the serenity
and splendour of a place where nature
reigns supreme. Listeners are invited to
imagine scenes of majestic humpback
whales gliding through icy waters, colonies
of resilient penguins braving the harsh
environment, and the historic tall ships
that once navigated these treacherous
seas. Driven by fierce westerly winds,
this piece captures the spirit of adventure
and discovery that has long defined this
extraordinary region.

Autumn Triptych—Eric Nathan. Autumn
Triptych, Eric Nathan (2008) 15' for wind
ensemble Instrumentation: Piccolo 1-2,
flute 1-2, oboe 1-2, bassoon 1-2, clarinet
1-3, bass clarinet, alto saxophone 1-2,
tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone,
trumpet 1-3, horn 1-4, tenor trombone
1-2, bass trombone, euphonium, tuba,
timpani, percussion 1-4, piano "Autumn
Triptych" was commissioned by the twelve
member schools of the Atlantic Coast
Conference Band Directors Association.
It is inspired by three paintings, each
related to autumn: Jackson Pollock's
"Autumn Rhythm" (1950), John Atkinson
Grimshaw's "Evening Glow" (c.1884),
and Georgia O'Keeffe's "The Red Maple
at Lake George" (1926). My piece does
not seek to represent the paintings,
but instead uses the paintings as a
springboard for inspiration and musical
form. It is my sincere hope that viewing
the paintings will lend deeper insight into
the meaning of the music and the music
in some way may allow the viewer to see
the art from a new perspective. The three
movements may either be performed
individually or as a set (and may also be
grouped in pairs). I. "Falling Up" is inspired
by Jackson Pollock's painting "Autumn
Rhythm" (1950) (found in the Metropolitan
Museum of Art, New York) and shares its
title with Shel Silverstein's book of poetry
of the same name. II. "Evening Glow" is
inspired by a painting of the same name
by nineteenth-century British painter John
Atkinson Grimshaw. I was immediately
captivated by the peaceful, yet sorrowfully
longing quality of the painting when I saw
it during a visit to the Yale Center for
British Art (where it resides in the Paul
Mellon Collection). The painting shows
a woman standing alone, looking down
a winding road during the dusk of a fall
evening. As the road recedes into the
distance, the entire painting fades away
into the golden glow of the autumn sunset.
III. "Red" is inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe's
painting "The Red Maple at Lake George"
(1926). My work is inspired by O'Keeffe's
intensely vibrant and fiery depiction of
a red maple leaf. The music references
different associations with the color red,
from the fiery and sassy to the robust and
vibrantly radiant.

The Blessing of Faith (Summer)—
Jodie Blackshaw. "The Blessing of
Light" (Summer) is the first movement
from Symphony No. 1. In this "fanfare"
edition, the burn of Summer is depicted
in an energetic opening that is also
inspired by the birth of the Sun. The
material commences in gritty, tight
harmonic clusters book-ended by octave
passages, guiding an energetic set of
boldly intensifying statements through
each of these refracted "light" scales.
These harmonic clusters gradually
dissipate until the audience is finally
released of the tension at measure 95
with a C major chord. Measure 102-end
depicts Michael's Leunig's "glorious" light
and its ability to consume the darkness
that lies within.

Bolero for Band—Maurice Ravel/arr. R.
Mark Rogers. Initially commissioned by
Ida Rubenstein as a ballet work initially,
Maurice Ravel's Bolero has become
his most popular and often-performed
orchestra composition, which was a
surprise to the composer who described
it as "seventeen minutes of orchestra
without any music." With a structure that is
simplicity itself, Bolero uses two alternating
melodies in what Ravel described as a
"crescendo on commonplace melod[ies]."
Mark Rogers' transcription of Bolero is
an entirely complete wind band version
of the piece; omitting not a single note
or exotic instrument, thereby transferring
the brilliance of Ravel's orchestral score
to the symphonic wind band with as much
fidelity to the original as possible. Ravel
calls for a very large orchestra (triple
woodwinds, saxophones, large brass
section, harp, celesta and percussion).
Consequently, this transcription of Bolero
contains a large amount of divisi writing. It
goes without saying that this transcription
will be most successfully performed by
large symphonic wind band.

Champions of the Sky—Rossano
Galante. Since the dawn of humanity,
we have been fascinated with fantasies
of flight. The winged creatures that
soar majestically with the wind are a
gorgeous tapestry in our skies. Capture
the grandeur and beauty of these birds
with soaring horn lines, majestic fanfares,
and emotional melodies that transport
musicians and audiences to a world we
can only dream of. (6:00)
