Caveat Emptor (The Attack of the Pink
Dolphins)—Ellen Rowe. Commissioned by
the Florida Bandmasters Association, this
chart is a celebration that combines hip-hop
and straight-ahead jazz. The band will need
to play with some swagger on this piece - it
has serious attitude, and the whole band will
need to be in the groove!

Count Bubba—Gordon Goodwin. Here's
a monster of a swinger that's designed to
feature the entire ensemble. In addition to
a wonderful riff-based theme and a very
satisfying shout chorus, the chart includes
section feature spots for saxes, trumpets
and trombones, without the rhythm section.
Very effective!

Crisis—Freddie Hubbard/arr. Mike Kamuf.
The entire ensemble gets a workout on
this highly creative chart! The overriding
style is driving swing alternating with some
Latin statements of the melody. Suggested
solos are included for trombone, tenor,
trumpet, and guitar or optional alto sax, but
improvised solos are welcome. The tempo
is 164-172 bpm, the lead trumpet range is
to written B above the staff, and there's a
roaring shout chorus. Optional parts are
included for flute and vibes. This chart will
be a highlight on any program!

Curveball—Paul Baker. Featuring a tenor
saxophone soloist, Curveball is in the style
of the Ray Charles big band. It opens with
huge ensemble brass and bluesy sax lines
that switch in and out of a double-time
swing feel. The navigation from swing
ballad style, double-time feel, and true
medium swing and the return to the original
swing ballad style helps to define the chart
throughout. A soulful melody for the soloist,
which is written and improvised, is icing on
the cake, along with an improvised solo and
cadenzas at the end. Brass ranges: trumpet
to written high D and trombone to written
G. This is a real powerhouse chart for the
entire band and an important addition to the
tenor sax solo repertoire!

Deep in the Scene—Mike Sailors. An
incredibly hip swing chart steeped in the
language of the hard bop era. Tempo
is a very manageable 165 bpm, but the
language is more advanced than a typical
swing-era chart. Trumpet and tenor sax state
the melody as it gains strength throughout
the first chorus. Even though the melody
may be challenging, the solo changes are
a familiar D minor blues progression. Solo
opportunities are provided for numerous
players, and there is a written solo provided
for the bassist later in the piece. Following
a short shout section, the drums get 16
bars to solo (with additive backgrounds)
before returning to the top of the chart via
D.C. al Coda. Trumpet range is to written C;
trombone range is to G.

Giddyup!—Rick Hirsch. Better big bands
will have a great time with this chart that
features a catchy, upbeat swing groove with
a hip-hop vibe. There are idiomatic melodic
and rhythmic themes in all the horn sections
which keep returning, thanks to a uniquely
modified rondo form. The improvised solos
are scored for tenor and trombone and the
brass ranges are moderate for this difficulty
level. Come on, let's go!

Jones. Every jazz fan knows it, loves it
and has wished it was in print! And now,

Basie Orchestra on their album This Time
by Basie: Hits of the 50s & 60s, Quincy

You will bring your audiences to their feet.
Beginning with the Count's rubato piano
tremolo, this laid-back shuffle chart features
in-your-face ensemble writing at its finest.
There is short, written-out solo space for
trombone and piano, but mostly this chart
simply swings its tail off with the entire
ensemble from beginning to end! Never has
a sad song sounded so happy! Very highly
recommended!

Makin' Whoopee—Walter Donaldson/
arr. Dave Wolpe. Bass trombone players
can count on one hand the good charts
available for their instrument. Well, here is
one of the best yet - arranged in the style of
the great George Roberts. With a medium-
swing feel, this showcase tune will bring
out the best in your bass trombone player
with no improvisation, just written melody.
There is some written or improvised jazz for
second trumpet in Harmon mute, and the
lead trumpet has a unison line to written
high E. A nice sax soli is the icing on the
cake. An outstanding feature chart!

Moanin'—Charles Mingus/arr. Sy Johnson.
This is an awesome Mingus double-time
swing chart in the original version as
recorded on the Mingus Big Band 93 CD.
It kicks off with a hot bari sax intro, features
some really tight licks, an extended open
solo section, and an infectious bari sax line
that drives the whole piece. Serious jazz for
serious bands!

N o r w e g i a n W o o d — L e n n o n &
McCartney/arr. Bill Holman. Buddy Rich's
band recorded this Beatles tune, and it
is one of Holman's best-known charts.
Treated as a jazz waltz, full of excitement
and energy, it features solos for alto sax
and trombone. Lots of raw power and
blistering figures make this the ideal
concert opener or closer!

Ornithology—Parker & Harris/arr. Greg
Yasinitsky. Greg Yasinitsky has set Charlie
Parker's great bebop tune to swing at about
172 - 200 bpm. Featuring plenty of excellent
sax section solis, brass solis, solo spaces
(suggested written solos included) for tenor
sax, and piano, this is fine big band swing
chart on a great tune. The lead trumpet
range goes up to written B-flat above the
staff and optional flute and vibraphone
parts are included. This is essential jazz
repertoire, and this chart is very highly
recommended!

Proove Your Groove—Alan Baylock.
Yes, it's funky in many ways, performed
around 88 BPM. The groove is deep and

trumpet range to written high C, solos
re for trombone 1, with a suggested
written-out solo, and for drumset. Optional
parts include vibes and flute. Although

So Here's the Thing—Rick Lawn. Based
on the chord progression from the Duke
Ellington-Billy Strayhorn classic Take the
"A" Train, this chart opens with the train's
arrival at the station where it's "All aboard!"
for a fun swinging adventure. Trombone
and alto sax solos (written solos provided)
are followed by trading fours between the
brass and the bassist (written solos are
provided here as well). A full-bodied shout
chorus follows, including an 8-bar sax soli.
The musical adventure comes to a close
with the train pulling back into the station
with smiles all around. Trumpet range to
written high D. Trombone to A. Written
piano and bass parts are provided.

Space City Shuffle—Mark Taylor.
Commissioned by the Houston Jazz
Orchestra, here's a hard-driving shuffle
tune that will make your mature ensemble
sound first-rate. The rhythm section sets
the table for the saxes on the melody,
answered by punches from the brass. Solo
spots for tenor and trumpet are interspersed
with inventive lines for the full ensemble. A
soli for the trombone section follows, and a
rousing shout chorus caps things off.
