Running of the Bulls—Doug Beach &
George Shutack. This unique original is
an ideal change-of-pace tune for your next
festival or concert program. For developing
ensembles, it opens with a mysterious,
Spanish style rubato introduction with solo
trumpet and rhythm section, then breaks into
an all-out, hot Latin/Spanish style that doesn't
let up. Crisp ensemble work and written or
improvised solos lead to a percussion break
before the head returns. Pure excitement!

So Danco Samba—Antonio Carlos
Jobim/arr. Victor Lopez. Victor Lopez
creatively sets Jobim's great samba with an
alternating and brief swing feel. The tempo

clever quotes you'll recognize. There's also
a written or improvised solo for tenor sax,
a few piano montuno interludes, accessible
brass ranges, and optional parts included
for augmented instrumentations. Add it all
together and you've got a fine samba chart.
Highly recommended!

Afro Blue—Mongo Santamaria/arr.
Michael Mossman. Made famous by
John Coltrane, but treated here in a more
traditional Afro-Latin style, this is something
a little different for jazz ensemble. As with
all Mossman charts, the rhythm section is
meticulously notated to ensure the correct
style. The 3/4 pattern throughout draws
heavily on African influences and the
melody is masterfully passed from section
to section. A single pentatonic scale works
for the solo section, making this a wonderful
vehicle for involving many soloists.

Alla Africana—Jane Kozhevnikova. With
its memorable piano hook, creative use
of percussion, and unison rhythms, your

Cuban chart!

Taylor. One of the essential Latin jazz classics,
this catchy tune moves and grooves in

Carismatica—Michele Fernandez. This is
the real deal - an authentic bossa nova from
a master of the style. Creative voicings along
with guitar and vibes create some fresh and
exotic colors, and an unexpected shift to a
funk groove takes it to the next level. Along
with detailed rhythm section parts, there are
optional auxiliary percussion parts that add
to the Brazilian feel. Moderate brass ranges
and straightforward rhythms make this a very
playable chart. Open solos for all instruments.

Coconut Champagne—Denis DiBlasio/arr.
Victor Lopez. Victor Lopez' arrangement of
this great tune by Denis DiBlasio is a more
accessible version than the original. At a
medium grade level with an upbeat samba
groove, everybody gets some action with
the classic Maynard Ferguson trumpet solo
harmonized for the trumpet section in a
playable range. There is a sax section soli
that can also be a solo for bari sax or any
saxophone. An optional percussion part will

JAZZ CHARTS
Perfect for those special moments

American Patrol—arr. Mike Lewis. Glenn Miller's band made this
a huge hit in World War II. Here it's scored for young players, with no
individual solos, very modest brass ranges, and plenty of ensemble
sound. Easy to rehearse and perform, it swings right along and is
playable with optional reduced or expanded instrumentation. A winner!

The Star-Spangled Banner—arr. Paul Clark. Although this
piece is not usually associated with jazz bands, this arrangement
works so well it can appropriately be included in any jazz concert.
It's also invaluable to have in the files for those emergency situations
when a jazz group is called upon to perform our national anthem. It
includes just the right elements to give it a jazz flavor yet maintains
the dignity and reverence of the original. While it is harmonically jazzy,
it is rhythmically traditional and can serve as accompaniment for
audience singing. It is also playable with reduced instrumentation. If
your jazz ensemble plays for basketball games, this is perfect. A wise
investment for all jazz programs! Highly recommended!
