Ojitos (Little Eyes)—Michele Fernandez.
Having written this for her son in 1998,
composer Michele Fernandez brings us
this highly emotional and rewarding work
for jazz ensemble. The nostalgic opening
solo section (which is optional) leads to
a sizzling salsa groove that gradually
intensifies throughout. The distinctive
melody is complemented by lushly scored
countermelodies, and all rhythm section
parts are carefully notated for authenticity.

Old Havana—Brad Ciechomski. The
opening portion of this Latin rock chart
is set in C minor at 144 bpm. The rhythm
section parts are well notated, and the chart
grooves along before kicking into high gear
with a piano montuno at 215 bpm to set up
the burning second section. A great workout
for the whole band!

Pick Up the Pieces—arr. Victor Lopez.
It's funk-rock... you know it, you love it! The
tune is infectious, the arrangement is right
on target with no individual solos but plenty
of section and ensemble work. The sax soli
is crazy hot and the lead trumpet range is
to written A above the staff. Lots of unison
lines, some fun bari sax licks and a very
hip stop-time interlude that really cooks.
This arrangement really works for this
tune! Consider this chart a winner! Optional
expanded instrumentation.

and sort of funky groove played at a laid-
back tempo. Written-out solos are provided
for trumpet 1 (optional flugelhorn) and alto
sax 1 along with some very nice ensemble
sections. This chart is great to slow things
down on your program and still keep the
audience engaged.

Red Clay—Freddie Hubbard/arr. Mike
Kamuf. A gem of a chart, here's Freddie
Hubbard's Red Clay arranged for
developing jazz bands. Characteristically,
it's a straight-eighths groove at 132 bpm
with written or ad lib solos for tenor sax
and trumpet 2. A more subtle and quieter
interlude adds variety and interest, and a
unique and effective rhythm section break
featuring the bassist leads to the return of
the head. The trumpet 1 range is to written
G on top of the staff and a nice shout
chorus further adds to the fun. Playable
with optional expanded instrumentations. A
great jazz standard superbly arranged!
10513883 Jazz Ensemble. . . . . . 48.00
Road Song—Wes Montgomery/arr. Alan
Baylock. The groove is funky rock in this
chart on the signature Wes Montgomery
tune. At about 140 bpm, the solos are
suggested and written for guitar and for
any C, B-flat, E-flat, or bass clef instrument
for flexibility. The solo section can easily
be opened up to include as many soloists
as desired. The ensemble gets plenty of
exposure as well, both behind the soloists
and as a featured partner. Quality chart!

Mossman. In 1977 Stevie Wonder was in
his prime and Sir Duke was on top of the
charts. Michael Philip Mossman takes this
familiar hit and adds his own unique touch.
The opening features the brass with sax
section fills. The middle section goes into
a double-time swing and includes a solo for
tenor sax, a soli for the saxes, and a drum

Soul Proprietor—Ellen Rowe. A gospel
rocker with a straight-eighth feel - this
chart rocks quietly and gradually builds in
intensity to the written or improvised solo

section player, or any brass player. Do not
miss the saxophone section soli without
the rhythm section that materializes after
the solos. Then it's back to the recap and
a surprise ending. With its varied textures,
strong melody and happy attitude, this chart
is highly recommended!

effectively with the fully voiced power of the
rest of the chart, creating a very satisfying
rock-fusion groove!
