Lacuna—Henry Dorn. The Merriam-
Webster dictionary defines the word Lacuna
as "a blank space or a missing part: gap." It
comes from the Latin word lacus, or lake.
That word was modified to lacuna, or "pit." It
can be used to mean a void or missing part
of a narrative or gap in historical records.
In this context, lacuna refers more directly
to historical lacuna that our educators help
fill with their students. That lacuna could
range from insight on American English
and literature, to music education, and/
or the history of the middle passage. Our
educators give their lives to filling in this
"void" and standing in the gap on behalf of
their students
