Sleep—Eric Whitacre. Take a serious look
at this one! Eric Whitacre has crafted an
achingly beautiful work, magnificent in
its broad, sweeping lines and layering of
sound. This haunting chorale begins softly
and slowly blossoms to a powerful climax.
It makes a fine stand-alone band piece, but
can also be performed with SATB chorus,
with original text by celebrated American
poet Charles Anthony Silvestri. This is a
superior choice for creating an intimate
moment in your concert performance.

Snow on Snow—Megan Vinther. Capturing
the quiet beauty of winter, this lyrical and
introspective work blends haunting original
melodies with Gustav Holst's beloved In the
Bleak Midwinter. Delicate textures and rich
harmonic progressions evoke the peaceful
stillness of snowfall, inviting performers and
audience to pause and reflect. Serene and
expressive, this piece is a perfect addition
to winter or festival concerts, offering a
moment of calm amid the season's bustle.

Solas Ane (Yesterday's Joy)—Samuel
Hazo. With a unique blend of flowing lines
and lush textures coupled with dynamic
Celtic drumming, this musical creation is a
very stylized and effective setting for wind
band. Interspersed are quiet moments with
soloistic woodwind lines that contrast nicely
with the emotional full-band passages.

Soldier's Poem from World War I—Jack
Stamp. Setting Alan Seeger's powerful
poem I Have a Rendezvous with Death,
the musical themes are deftly woven
around the narrator's lines to create an
atmostphere all its own.

Some treasures are heavy with human
tears—John Mackey. The story of this
work begins with a tragedy, but that's not
where it ends. Although it commemorates
a specific catastrophe, the piece is not
programmatic. Instead, it's a meditation
on grief, transcending elegizing a singular
horrific event and instead representing how
we cope with all tragedies. Beginning with
the peacefulness of a lullaby, the piece
takes a simple motive and transports
it through a series of emotions that
include denial, shock, fury, and anguish
before finding acceptance. Throughout,
conflicting harmonies present an internal
turbulence that peaks in a climactic wail
of agony bordering on rage. Although
the ending projects a return to peace, it
is left incomplete with the final gesture
of a single muted trumpet rising from the
silence in a bright flash only to be suddenly
extinguished. - from program notes by
Jacob Wallace

Southern Hymn—Samuel R. Hazo.
The original themes used in this beautiful
setting are intended to be played in the
style of a slow Southern folk hymn, similar
to Amazing Grace or Shenandoah. Using
suspensions and resolutions as well as
calm moments and powerfully emotional
builds, this is a marvelous work for
expanding your ensemble's stylistic and
dynamic range.

Spirit of Adventure—Daniel Jones. The
spirit of adventure is accurately portrayed
in this grade 3 tour de force. It has all the
elements players and conductors love:
excitement, bold sounds, and interesting
harmonies; yet, it avoids the pitfalls that
so often lead to failure: rapidly changing
and asymmetric rhythms, phrases too long
for the students to navigate, and intricate
articulations.

Strange Humors—John Mackey. Modal
melodies and syncopated rhythms of
Middle Eastern music with percussive
African drumming bring about a striking
blend of musical cultures. The central focus
is the pulse of the djembe, an hourglass-
shaped drum played with bare hands
that's a cultural instrument of West African
countries. The groove of the djembe
combined with quirky rhythms throughout
create an impression not soon forgotten.

Summer Dances—Brian Balmages. A
vibrant and fanciful composition for bands
at this grade level, Summer Dances
offers several contrasting moods in a
setting of motion and drama. Flourishes
in the woodwinds and heroic themes in
the brass are tempered with the colors of
summer and built up with drama to a big,
powerful ending. A fine piece of music from
a composer sure to become a recognized
name in band music.

Sway—Ed Windels. Sway began life as
the second movement of my Incidentally
Music for flute, clarinet, guitar, violin and
cello, premiered in 2010. That piece was an
exploration of dance or dance-like forms of
Latin heritage. Sway is not a specific dance
form, but generally inspired by the genre.
During the early spring of 2022, it occurred
to me that it would translate well to concert
band, allowing me to explore coloristic
possibilities and add some extra rhythmic
interest to the main melody.

Symphonic Mountain Fantasy (for
Concert Band)—Trenton Rhodes. The
genesis for Symphonic Mountain Fantasy
was the idea of writing a piece with a
smaller reduced instrumentation but at a
higher grade level. The result is a work that
is derived mainly from a singular melody
presented in the beginning, taking it to
completely different places and tonalities
throughout the entirety of the work. The
melody rises and falls in ways that resemble
mountainous terrain far in the distance,
which is where the title originates from. This
piece was chosen as the winner of the 2025
Association of Concert Bands/John Phillip
Sousa Foundation Composition Contest. -

The Winter Storm—Aaron McMichael.
During the winter, large storms occur
from time to time. These storms can be
dangerous and beautiful at the same time.
This piece starts off fast, dark, and furious,
then moves into a lighter mood during the
middle section before ending as it started.
Paying close attention to all articulations
and dynamics throughout the piece
while maintaining the balance between
winds and percussion will develop many
essential musical skills. With interesting
melodies, subtle dissonance, and multiple
percussion parts, your journey through the
winter storm will be exciting and enjoyable.
Use this as a concert opener or closer and
for contest use.

Tirelessly through the Night...—William
Owens. William Owens' powerful,
programmatic work, Tirelessly through
the Night..., is a musical depiction of
the explosion that ravaged a small
Texas community. Beginning softly and
hauntingly, the "Foreboding" gradually
intensifies as the destructive "Crisis" chaos
ensues. The "Aftermath" and "Regenesis"
segments offer hope and reassurance
in the wake of tragedy. Serious music for
serious ensembles! (4:00)
