This arrangement of DIVINUM MYSTERIUM begins
mysteriously, with six handbells punctuating
each phrase as if in procession and then
expanding with shimmering organ. The choral

On This Day Earth Shall Ring
arr. Lloyd Larson.
This historic English carol derived from Piae
Cantiones, 1582, with the tune
PERSONENT
HODIE, is set here in a buoyantly joyful manner
to celebrate the birth of Christ our King. The
verses, supported by a decorative piano
accompaniment, tell the Christmas story, each
ending with the Latin refrain, "in excelsis Deo!"
The optional 2-octave handbells chime in as the
lyrics extol, "On this day earth shall ring."

Once in Royal David's City
arr. Lee Dengler.
This carol, traditionally used as the opening
piece to a Lessons and Carols service, is the
hymn tune
IRBY arranged with warmth and
variety. The opening may be sung by a child
soloist or choir. The second stanza's beautiful
part-writing offers an enjoyable challenge for
the choir, especially if performed a cappella.
The third stanza features the congregation,
optional descant, and optional handbells or
handchimes (3 octaves.) The piece concludes
with a simple yet effective choral ending.

A Song of Christmas Joy
Diane Hannibal/arr. Jon Paige.
With a short quote from Bach's celebrated theme
Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, this lilting Christmas
anthem is also based on words adapted from a
fifth-century text. The well-crafted choral texture
includes a few points of imitation, occasional
cued tenor notes, and quite a bit of unison and
two-part singing. Optional cello and handbell
parts add color and interest.

Martellato done incorrectly can damage
the bell! As a general rule, start with the
bell no higher than the height of "two
tacos" off the pads and push the handle,
not the casting, into the foam.
