Handbells in Worship | Music for Two Bell Choirs
Hosanna, Loud Hosanna
arr. George Christ.
Originally written for handbells and harp, this
arrangement of the tune
ELLACOMBE can be
played by two handbell or handchime choirs, or
one choir with harp or piano. This piece is a duet
between the two parts, with each part carrying the
melody at different times. This will be a wonderful
opportunity to get together with another handbell
choir, or to have two choirs at one church play
together, one playing bells and one playing chimes.

How Great Our Joy
arr. Bill Ingram.
Multiple choices for performance are offered in
this setting based on the traditional German carol,
JUNGST. Performance options suggest using a bell
choir with piano, organ, or electronic keyboard for
the second choir part; or play with two handbell
choirs. Choir 1 requires 3-5 octaves of handbells
or handchimes, while Choir 2 requires 2-3 octaves
of handbells or handchimes. Scored in a minor,
this piece is 67 measures.

I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day
arr. Anne Krentz Organ.
This arrangement is written for two choirs, with
the less-advanced group playing the part for
handchime choir. If two choirs are not available,
a keyboard may substitute for the handchime
choir. Opening with a bell peal gaily quoting
Joy to the World, the piece features a middle
section for handbells alone and then moves
back to the original key as the handchimes join.

I Will Arise and Go to Jesus
arr. Cathy Moklebust.
The Southern Harmony tune, RESTORATION is
arranged here for a double choir of two to three
and three, four or five octaves, with percussion,
but may also be played by a single choir.
Light thumb-damping, malleting or plucking
accompany the melody, which is presented
in two slightly different versions. This short
arrangement includes no accidentals, except for
the final chord, and is appropriate year-round
for worship and concert use.

Lamb of God
Cathy Moklebust.
This original composition for double choir of
handbells and handchimes is appropriate any
time of year, especially for Holy Communion.
The rich, lyrical melody sets a meditative mood
enhanced by contemporary harmonies.
The musical setting was inspired by the
text of the Agnus Dei: "Lamb of God, you take
away the sin of the world; have mercy on us;
grant us peace. Amen." The easy chime part
may also be played on a keyboard if chimes
are unavailable.

Le Cygne
arr. Fred Gramann.
One movement of the delightful musical suite
"Le Carnaval des Animaux" (Carnival of the
Animals), this piece was originally written for
solo cello and two pianos. Arranged here for
separate handchime and handbell choirs, it is
very true to the original work, even including
the sound of little "drops of water" in the
original second piano score. The piece may be
played with choir 1 (Handchimes) playing the
solo and choir 2 (Handbells) accompanying, or
the optional piano part may accompany choir
1 in place of handbells. Optionally, a cello or
flute may take the solo in place of choir 1, with
choir 2 accompanying. This title was arranged
specifically for Distinctly Bronze West, 2024.

Simple Gifts
arr. Cathy Moklebust.
The well-known Shaker hymn is arranged for
double handbell and handchime choir, with
the chime part being much easier than the bell
part. The first section is gentle and relaxed, and
then the hymn takes on a lively, dancing "jig"
character, with malleted rhythmic bass bells and
a bouncy, lilting melody. The handbell part can
stand alone, and the handchime part may be
played by a keyboard instrument if desired.

Te Deum Laudamus
Cathy Moklebust.
This delightfully rhythmic original composition
is very flexible. It may be played as a double
choir piece for handbell and handchime choirs
or by handbell choir alone. The up tempo
meter alternates between 4/4 and 6/8, and the
handbell part includes the use of mallets, ring
touch, martellato, and martellato lift. A restful,
lyrical middle section follows, using a new
melody that begins softly then blossoms into a
rich and glorious sound. The piece concludes
in its original up-beat, rhythmic style. Te Deum
Laudamus is translated as We Praise Thee, O
God, making this piece suitable throughout the
church year, as well as for festival or concert use.
