Csardas—Vittorio Monti/arr. Kirt Mosier.
This famous violin showpiece sounds great
as a full orchestra work! Although written
by Italian Vittorio Monti, this well-loved work
is regularly played by Gypsy orchestras
throughout Hungary, Romania and Eastern
Europe. The csardas is a Hungarian dance
originating from the music played in the
csarda, a tavern in farming villages. There
are two sections; a slow lassu section and
a fast friss ("fresh") section, creating a piece
rich in flavor with equal portions of lyricism
and technical brilliance.

A Matador's Tale—Mark Lortz. With
traditional Spanish flair, this programmatic
work depicts a bullfight, beginning with
the matador's fanfare entrance. After the
various stages of the fight, the music comes
to a rousing end. The many doublings in this
intermediate work allow orchestras to play it
with missing instrumentation.
