Waltz No. 2 (from "Suite for Variety
Orchestra")—Dmitri Shostakovich/arr.
Jamin Hoffman. This sardonic waltz may
be Shostakovich's most well-known piece.
It has appeared in movie soundtracks,
commercials, and even on soccer fields!
Slightly simplified and arranged for a young
string orchestra, it swings from B minor to D
major and back again. When performed in
Europe, it's traditional for audiences to sway
and sing along – a tradition that begs to be
transported across the pond!

Winter from "The Four Seasons" (Second
Movement)—Antonio Vivaldi/arr. Tim
McCarrick. This arrangement is simple
enough for the violin, viola, or cello soloist
of your choice! Vivaldi's lyrical second
movement, now in G Major, stays true to
the original with the famous melody over
pizzicato accompaniment. The violin solo is
entirely in first position, and the viola and
cello soloists only need to know the first
three notes they learn in third position: D,
E, and F sharp on the A string!

1812 Overture—P.I. Tchaikovsky/
arr. Carrie Lane Gruselle. Finally, an
arrangement of Tchaikovsky's masterwork
that includes themes from the entire work,
not just the ending! Themes include the
Opening Hymn, Pastoral Interlude, Russian
Folk Dance and the famous jubilant Victory
Melody set over an exultant Russian
anthem. It follows the form of the original
while keeping the work quite accessible for
younger players. Epic!

1812 Overture—P.I. Tchaikovsky/arr.
Sandra Dackow. This is an excellent
selection for an important concert with
your string orchestra! Technical demands
are kept well in check. First violins
require some third-position work, but all
other parts can be played entirely in first
position. Fun for players and audiences
alike! In addition to the medium-level
string parts, this arrangement also
includes optional parts for easy violin,
beginning violin, viola, cello, bass, piano,
timpani, and percussion.

Adoration—Florence Price/arr. Thomas
Taylor Dickey. Written in 1951, just two
years before the composer's death, this
slow, meditative piece originally for solo
organ reminds the listener of a prelude
or offertory piece at church. With a
performance time of approximately five
minutes, a slow tempo marking, and its
ability to be performed almost entirely in
first position by all sections, this beautiful
work should be in the library of every school
orchestra program.

Allegretto (Symphony No. 7, Movement
2)—Ludwig van Beethoven/arr. Robert
D. McCashin. The second movement
of Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 has
enormous popularity with performers and
audiences. This thoughtful version goes
beyond a cursory repeat of the famous
theme by including developmental material
from the movement which gives a more
complete understanding of Beethoven's
intent. This remains faithful to the original
and makes for an excellent performance!
Highly recommended!
