Adoration—Florence B. Price/arr. Steve
Olson. Originally composed for organ by
African-American composer Florence B.
Price in 1951. With its slow, expressive
melodies, this piece is a great opportunity
for younger orchestras to work on bow
distribution and vibrato. All parts except for
a small section for the basses are playable
in first position, making it an excellent
transition piece for shifting exercises. The
arrangement captures the beauty and
richness of the original composition.

Allegretto (from "The Creatures of
Prometheus")—Ludwig van Beethoven/
arr. Rick England. Absolutely perfect for
cross-curricular study in middle school
or high school! Prometheus, through
trickery, stole fire from Zeus, gave it
to mortals and was punished daily for
eternity for his crime. Beethoven's melody
itself has a bit of trickery and a good
deal of moxy as it weaves through each
section of the orchestra. The story and
Beethoven's marvelous music will provide
good discussion among the players and
even your audience.

Allegretto Grazioso—Antonin Dvorak/arr.
Robert Sieving. Here's the 3rd movement
from "Symphony #8," one of Dvorak's
most famous works and it certainly carries
his penchant for memorable melodies!
Allegretto Grazioso, is actually based on a
song from an earlier opera, and the coda in
a faster tempo recalls the Slavonic Dances.
These infectiously joyous melodies will be
loved by students and audiences alike.

transcription captures all of the spectacle
and grandeur of the original. Timpani is
optional but highly recommended.

Allegro from Jupiter—W.A. Mozart/arr.
John Caponegro. Containing selected
themes from the first movement of
Symphony No. 41, this Grade 4 arrange-
ment of Mozart's last symphony clearly
shows his brilliance. Mozart's adventurous
approach to the material paves the way
for Beethoven and other symphonic

Allegro from Serenade No. 1 in D—W.A.
Mozart/arr. Robert D. McCashin. This
delightful Serenade in D was completed
in 1769, when Mozart was a mere 13
years of age (an ideal fact to share with
young students)! The first movement, even
though composed at such a young age,
provides challenges for every musician in
the ensemble and is musically appealing to
players and audience.

Georges/arr. Deborah Baker Monday.
Spotlight one of the first known classical
composers of African ancestry with this
incredible arrangement showcasing the
music of Bologne, a Black contemporary
of Mozart. Developing string players will
be introduced to classical-style playing.
Upper strings reinforce half position
while cellists reinforce extensions. An
outstanding choice!

Andante (from Symphony No. 5)—
Felix Mendelssohn/arr. William LaRue
Jones. This third movement is written
in an operatic aria style, with the first
violins singing the opening lyrical melody
over a pulsating accompaniment.
Mendelssohn's compositional style
belongs to the Romantic period with its
more emotional, expressive qualities.
The Andante increasingly engages each
string section, expanding the interplay of
parts and infusing more rhythmic drama
before ending in calm serenity. This is
an excellent composition for students to
develop tone quality, learn the functions of
foreground and background in balancing
parts, and experience the emotional shifts
of a Romantic composition. (3:20)

Andante Festivo—Jean Sibelius/arr.
James Richards. Originally composed
for string quartet in 1922, Andante festivo
was rescored by the composer in 1938 for
string orchestra with timpani. The work
emphasizes the warmth and rich sonority
of the string orchestra, reflecting a
hymnlike ceremonial quality. Broad lyrical
phrases explore a wide range of dynamic
contrast, phrasing, bow distribution, and
orchestral color.

Ballet No. 6 (from L'Amant Anonyme)—
Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-
Georges/arr. Jennifer Meckler. In this
orchestral excerpt from Joseph Bologne's
only surviving opera, L'Amant Anonyme
(The Anonymous Lover), students will
learn how to play in the Classical-era
style, 6/8 meter at a prestissimo tempo,
ternary form, and more. The cello part
includes a number of viola cues that can
be helpful if there is a smaller viola section
in the ensemble. First violin, second violin,
and viola parts are entirely in first position
but require extended fingerings.
