Trolls—Todd Stalter. In Norse mythology,
trolls were creatures that lived in the
forests, mountains, or caves, away from
human settlements. They were seen as
antagonistic towards humans, brutish-
looking, and were to be avoided. Various
folk legends claimed they were as big as
giants or as small as gnomes and had
shapeshifting abilities. No doubt, many
curious people must have ventured out
to see a troll for themselves. This piece
vividly explores sneaking around in dark
and unfamiliar places, a sense of confident
adventure, and - quite possibly - the
surprise of spotting a troll! This will come
together very well in rehearsal and will
intrigue your students with its unique sound.

Viking Song—Samuel Coleridge-Taylor/
arr. Jay Coles. Published in 1911, it's
speculated that Coleridge-Taylor composed
this spirited seafaring song for students
during his tenure at the Crystal Palace
School of Music in London. The lyrics and
heavily accented melody depict clanging
anvils hammered by mythical Thor and
Odin as steel ships are forged in the fire.
Like many vocal songs of the day, the piece
features key changes at each new verse.
This accessible arrangement for string
orchestra modulates from C major to G
major, ending back in C major as the strong,
lilting melody is passed between sections of
the orchestra.
