Across the Crescent Moon—Caryn
Wiegand Neidhold. Evoke a velvet night
as wisps of clouds float across a sliver of
moonlight, only to slip away into darkness.
Impressionistic elements paint a picture of
the secretive crescent moon and depict its
arc across the night sky.

As the Sun Rises—Vincent Kantorski.
While not strictly programmatic, this piece
was inspired by a stunningly beautiful
sunrise at the beach. The opening bars
depict the soft glow of light that precedes
the appearance of the sun itself, while the
rest of the piece is an expression of the
sense of joy, awe, and our own smallness
compared to the beauty of the sun rising
over the ocean.

Macbeth Bain/arr. Carrie Lane Gruselle.
The comforting Scottish hymn "Brother
James' Air" is uniquely set in this reflective
arrangement by Carrie Lane Gruselle, who

Grace" as a partner song later in the work.
The beautiful melody weaves its way

Black Cat (A Hallowe'en Adventure)—R.
Scott Whittington. This spooky Halloween
adventure incorporates meowing cats,
tremolos foretelling eerie events, pizzicato
suggesting stealthy cat movement, and
loads of scary melodic material in the
minor mode for all sections. Written at
a Level 2, it is a perfect early concert
piece for developing string orchestras. A
piano part is included for rehearsal, which
may be used during performance at the
director's discretion. All parts except bass
are in first position, allowing directors to
focus on intonation, blend, dynamics, and
rhythmic accuracy.The etymology of the
score marking "Scarioso" is unknown, but
its source could be the topic of a lively
discussion! Subito pianissimos for violin 2
and viola add to the mystery and overall
dramatic effect of. This piece offers an ideal
opportunity to introduce glissandos for violin
1, 2, and cello. The final three-note chord in
violin 1 and 2 as well as the double-stopped
pizzicato D to B-flat in the cellos are
opportunities for focus and discussion. The
2:33 performance time can be shortened by
eliminating the repeated section.

Blue-Fire Fiddler—Soon Hee Newbold.
This kickin' fiddle tune is energetic, exciting
and fun. The fast and furious fiddling sounds
much harder than it really is. Riffs, finger
patterns and bowings are very idiomatic
and lend themselves to fast playing. This is
sure to be the hit of the concert!
