Fantasy on "Aloha 'Oe"—Queen
Lili'uokalani/arr. Brian Balmages. This
gorgeous fantasy is based on the well-
known Hawaiian song Aloha 'Oe, written
by Queen Lili'uokalani. Translated as
"Farewell to Thee," it works extremely
well both as a lyrical portion of a program
or as a part of an emotional send-
off to celebrate graduating students.
Beautiful harmonic twists are masterfully
intertwined in a work that is extremely
accessible to younger students yet
sounds mature enough to be enjoyed

Frost Quake—Sarah Siegler. A frost
quake is a seismic event caused by a
sudden cracking in frozen soil or rock. You
can hear crackling sounds underneath the
ground at below-zero temperatures. The
dark minor melody and tremolos portray
the frozen earth and crackling sounds. The
time signature changes contrasted with
a lyrical middle section allow developing
musicians to work on a wide variety of
playing techniques. There is even a section
where the musicians use col legno and
percussive techniques to give the audience
a more visceral experience of this unique
event. Great for a winter concert!
