could be the high point of your concert! The
dark opening sets the stage for the entry

Memory of a Shanty (Short Themes from
a Ship Overseas Series)—Thomas, Liam.
Short Themes from a Ship Overseas is a
series of short pieces for string orchestra
(originally written for guitar quartet) that
explores a sense of wonder that is invoked
by a dream of sailing over the vast open
seas and oceans of the world. At some
point in one's life, the idea of sailors, pirates,
and treasure is an inspiration that fuels
imagination filled with adventure. These
pieces explore that concept in a musical
form and transfer these ideas using themes,
textures, and ideas that are inspired by the
open seas. The entire series is adventurous
and great fun for all ages as parameters are
shaped to fit the theme and also innovate.
"Memory of a Shanty" is a melodic focused
piece in which a memorable tune returns
throughout the piece. It is reminiscent
of a shanty that sailors would sing while
exploring the open seas in centuries before.

Merrily We Stroll Along—Thom Sharp.
Sufferin' syncopation! Where will it land?
Once you get the hang of it, it'll be lots of
fun! Really! Written in 4/4 time but felt in a
lazy 2, every section gets a chance to play
the catchy two-bar rhythmic motif that holds
the whole piece together. That unifying
motif is found upside down, shortened to
one bar, and even played backwards as the
piece progresses. And to add to the fun, a
couple of nice melodies are presented over
the top of the motif from time to time.

The Nighthawk of Golden Bell—
Cameron Law. The Nighthawk of Golden
Bell was commissioned for the 30th
anniversary of Camp Con Brio (formerly
the Colorado ASTA String Camp), which
the composer founded in 1995. The camp
is currently held every summer at nearly
10,000 feet elevation at the Golden Bell
Camp above the town of Divide, Colorado.
The work is programmatic, bringing to
life a poem about the quest of a young
camper who must decide between the
security of the familiar and the uncertainty
of the unknown. The poem is an allegory
for the choices we make in life. A short
introduction (including a disguised quote
from Stravinski's Firebird) is followed by
an exciting quest including wolf howls and
bird screeches. At a mountain summit,
the child receives council from a mythical
bird before continuing the journey.
