A Solitary Wish—Brian Balmages.
This emotional and reflective work
paints a poignant picture of the holiday
season as seen through the eyes of a
homeless person on a street corner.
The juxtaposition of the melodies
Ukrainian Bell Carol and Greensleeves
paint a picture of a lonely person who is
eventually joined by others. A stunning
and unique work that brings awareness to
the holidays and the true spirit of giving.

Toyland and March of the Toys—
Victor Herbert/arr. Sandra Lentner. This
arrangement changes from the waltz-like
Toyland to the military-style March of the Toys
and its 6/8 rhythms. There are opportunities
for better cellists to shine, and moving through
three key signatures provides a challenge for
all students. A great departure from the usual
Christmas repertoire!

Troika (from "Lieutenant Kije")—Sergei
Prokofiev/arr. Stephen Wieloszynski. This
charming number takes its name from a
Russian sleigh called a "troika," pulled by
three horses and common in wintertime.
The melody is really quite familiar, bright
and bouncy as it evokes the sleigh. Parts
are carefully edited for school age players,
and many techniques are included, but can
be omitted if too hard. Optional percussion
parts are included. This would be a great
choice for a wintertime concert!

The Wexford Carol—arr. Katie O'Hara
LaBrie. This traditional Irish carol opens
with a solo for cello or violin (or soli for both)
over a distant drone. The tune weaves
throughout each section amid beautiful
countermelodies and simple meter
changes. After a glorious key change,
the music moves to a delicate close. An
optional harp part adds color. Guaranteed
to be a stunning addition to your winter
program or any time of year! (4:00)

What Child Is This?—arr. Jeffrey Turner.
A fresh and very creative reimaging of
this timeless Christmas classic that is a
delightful departure from the typical holiday
arrangements. Very colorful chromatic
harmony along with two key changes create
an original, mature, and engaging sound
that gives players many great opportunities
to reinforce a variety of fingering patterns.
The first half also gives players experience
with con sordino. An optional bell part adds
a beautiful veil of color.

Winter Solstice—Todd Parrish. This
popular work describes the wonder and
adventure of the winter season. Exciting
eighth-note passages are contrasted with
lyrical melodies throughout. All sections
alternate between both melody and
accompaniment while staying mainly in
first position. The viola part is particularly
interesting and challenging.
