Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas
Tallis—Ralph Vaughan Williams/arr.
Jamin Hoffman. This string masterpiece
rose in popularity after it was used in the
film Master and Commander: The Far
Side of the World. The simple, elegant
theme from Elizabethan church composer
Thomas Tallis was later expanded and
modernized by Vaughan Williams. This
lush arrangement adapts and simplifies
the original version into a work that is ideal
for developing string students. Doubled
octaves and divisi writing make this ideal
for large orchestras.

effortlessly from one section to another,
and only the first violin solo requires third

La bella cubana—José White/arr. Robert
Debbaut. In addition to numerous etudes
and a virtuosic violin concerto, violinist
Joseph (José) White Lafitte composed this
habanera for two violins, La Bella Cubana.
In this string orchestra arrangement of
a habanera originally composed for two
violins, the lyrical melodic solos are spread
throughout the orchestra. Traditional Cuban
dance rhythms in the middle theme capture
the vibrant joy of the original work.

La Forza del Destino Overture—Giuseppe
Verdi/arr. Michael Hopkins. The overture
to La Forza Del Destino was composed
when Italian composer, Giuseppe Verdi,
revised his opera for a performance at La
Scala in 1869. This arrangement captures
the full range of thematic contrasts and
emotion present in the original and will be
challenging and rewarding for developing
orchestras. Verdi intended the opening
agitated theme to represent fate, and
this melodic them unifies many different
thematic ideas in the overture. A musical
metaphor for the force of destiny - chaotic
on the surface, yet logical and coherent in
the depth of its design.

D, originally composed for trumpet and
orchestra. An excellent introduction to
late Baroque style playing for intermediate
students, featuring contrasting tempos,
dotted rhythms, and compound time
signatures in playable first position.

alternate viola (violin 2 in alto clef) parts.

Maelstrom—Katie O'Hara LaBrie. A
treacherous storm motif acts as the
undercurrent to quotes from famous water-
themed compositions, including Smetana's
Die Moldau, the haunting Aquarium from
Saint-Sans' Carnival of the Animals, and
a traditional Irish sea chantey as melodies
overlap in this musical storm. Developing
players will refine articulation skills while
navigating some shifting, chromatic lines,
and a variety of rhythms in 6/8 time.

March of the Marionette—Charles
Gounod/arr. Caryn Wiegand Neidhold.
This familiar sneaky theme was originally
composed for solo piano by French
composer Charles Gounod in 1872 as a bit
of a joke about a particular music critic. The
mysterious and foreboding motif has since
been used in film and TV, most notably as
the theme for the show Alfred Hitchcock
Presents. This string orchestra arrangement
skillfully weaves the ominous melody into all
sections, retaining the original D minor key
with the traditional change to the parallel D
major in the middle. Players will experience
various accidentals in 6/8 meter, with
minimal shifting in first violin and cello. With
the ghostly whimsy of a danse macabre,
this scary classic is perfect for your fall or
Halloween concert!

the original and lets your orchestra shine
without the need of winds and percussion.
