Victor Lopez. Only rarely does a jazz tune cross over to the pop charts the way this Chuck Mangione classic did back in the seventies! Flugelhorn solo on the first trumpet part is featured throughout with the distinctive melody and then with a written or ad lib solo along with a tenor solo. The flugelhorn solo range is up to an optional written high C, but the solo is cued on the first tenor part as well. The arrangement brings this contemporary gem within the range of the developing trumpet player without losing any of the hip appeal of the original. Don't be intimidated by the meter – it's challenging, but after a few minutes it feels quite natural and the students will totally groove on it. The melody is stated by second trumpet and first alto with solo space for both on easy chord changes. Articulation is critical, and the rhythm section may want to spend some quality time together.
