Silver Bells (from "Bells! A Holiday Choral
Suite")—Jay Livingston & Ray Evans/arr.
Jacob Narverud. A nostalgic holiday classic,
this favorite tune gets a fresh, elegant choral
setting that features all the sections of the choir.
Octave doublings, no divisi, and conservative
ranges make this accessible, and the beautiful
accompaniment for handbells, string ensemble,
and percussion highlights the arrangement. From
an 18-minute work of four movements that may be
performed independently (with optional endings),
in pairs, or as a complete set. 1. Winter Chimes;
2. Silver Bells; 3. Sleighin' Song (Jingle Bells
Hoedown); 4. This Year (Ring Out the Old, Ring

and folk-like themes, and a highly entertaining
square dance feature includes body percussion for
handclaps, thigh slaps, and foot stomps. Perform

Snowfall—David L. Brunner. Ryokan's short
poem on the beauty of snowfall was translated
into English by Kazuaki Tanahashi and serves
as the text for this subdued a cappella work for
more advanced divisi choirs. Gentle dissonance
and a slowly moving h armonic texture express the
serene quiet of winter.

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening—Eric
Whitacre. One of Eric Whitacre's most well-known
compositions, Sleep, is available now as it was
originally composed in 2000, using the Robert
Frost poem as its text. While the circumstances
of Frost's text led to the creation of Whitacre and
Silvestri's first beloved collaboration, this version
with the winter-themed text offers the chance
to perform and hear the music in a completely
different light.

This Year (Ring Out the Old, Ring In the New,
from "Bells! A Holiday Choral Suite")—Jacob
Narverud. Combining with the traditional Auld
Lang Syne, this sweetly sentimental original
work is written in a popular-song style. There is
an optional spoken solo in the middle as well as
an opportunity for the choir to recite their own
resolutions for the coming year and ring their own
bells in the final measures. Perform it successfully
with piano alone, with synth strings and drum
set, or add the optional full string and percussion
instrumentation. From an 18-minute work of four
movements that may be performed independently
(with optional endings), in pairs, or as a complete
set. 1. Winter Chimes; 2. Silver Bells; 3. Sleighin'
Song (Jingle Bells Hoedown); 4. This Year (Ring

the subject of loss and grief during the holiday
season, this incredibly meaningful work reminds
us that hope and love "will guide us through the
shade." Tender unison melodies and soothing
harmonies let the text shine, while the piano
accompaniment is supportive with a gentle motive
that keeps it moving forward.
